IPL 2025, MI vs LSG, Highlights: Fifties from Rickelton, Surya & bowlers power Mumbai to 2nd place

IPL 2025, MI vs LSG Highlights: Quickfire fifties from Rickelton, Surya and Will Jacks’ twin strike propel Mumbai to 2nd place

Brief scores: Mumbai Indians: 215/7 (Ryan Rickelton 58, Suryakumar Yadav 54, Mayank Yadav 2/40, Avesh Khan 2/42) beat Lucknow Super Giants:161 (Ayush Badoni 35, Jasprit Bumrah 4/22, Trent Boult 3/20) by 54 runs

Ryan Rickelton’s aggressive start and Suryakumar Yadav’s 28 ball cameo helped Mumbai Indians (MI) climb the points table. Both batters looked solid and now the latter even tops the Orange Cap standings. In the second innings, Jasprit Bumrah announced himself by grabbing four wickets. Hence, MI outplayed Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in all the three departments.

Highlights from MI vs LSG game, IPL 2025

Rickelton-SKY lit up Wankhede
Ryan Rickelton provided the start for his team. He faced both pacers and spinners in the power play, and none of them disturbed his rhythm. In the second over, he welcomed Prince Yadav with fourteen runs, smashing a six and a couple of fours. Later, when bowling charges were taken by Digvesh Rathi and Ravi Bishnoi, he slammed huge sixes off both. Anything fuller was dispatched towards the sight screen and anything marginally short was delivered to the spectators in the country region!

After Rickelton (58 off 32), it was Suryakumar Yadav who took the reign. His cheeky shots squarer to the wicket helped disturb the line and length of the bowlers. In fact, when Ravi Bishnoi was bowling his fourth over, he looked quite frustrated as SKY was toying with the field. He smashed 16 runs in that very over. SKY (427 Runs) surpassed Sai Sudharsan’s tally as he is now on top of the leaderboard for the Orange Cap. Surya scored 54 off 28 against LSG.

Rishabh Pant, the captain, looks clueless
Rishabh Pant’s record as a skipper has been impressive in IPL 2025. But against Mumbai, he looked clueless and that eventually led his team into a dire situation. One of the many crimes that he committed as captain was using only five bowlers. They looked off beat but Pant had no sixth option in his playing XI. This resulted in poor rotation of overs. In fact, Shardul Thakur wasn’t in the starting XI, even though he had been their key bowler in past matches.

Another blunder was by taking two unsuccessful reviews. We all know that T20 is a game of small margins and if any team misses those margins, they end up losing the match and that has been the gist of LSG’s tale.

Lastly, Pant introduced Digvesh Rathi in the 19th over. Asking a spinner to bowl the death overs makes no sense, especially if you are playing at a flat deck like Wankhade. Hence, in all, Pant was a clueless skipper. Had he not committed these mistakes, LSG could have restricted MI between 190-195.

Will Jack’s twin strike change the game
A lot of credit for the win goes to Will Jacks as he delivered the most impactful over in the entire match. In a single over, he dismissed two key players of LSG – Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant.

Firstly, a stellar catch was taken by Suryakumar Yadav to send Pooran back. Then a sitter was taken by Karn Sharma when Pant attempted a reverse sweep. Notably, if Jack had not dismissed Pooran, then the course of the game would’ve been different, considering how solid the Caribbean batter looked. He had already smashed three sixes to Deepak Chahar in the previous over.

After Will Jacks’ heroics, the steering wheel was in Jasprit Bumrah’s hand, as he drove his team with a clinical spell of 4/22. Apart from these two bowlers, it was Trent Boult who made perfect use of the windy conditions at Wankhade. He too ended up taking three wickets for his side.

Way forward
With 12 points, MI are now in the top four. The way they have bounced back is impressive, but nothing new, as they have pulled similar feats off in the previous editions.

LSG, on the other hand, need to pull up their socks as they are in a tight spot. With each game losing, their qualification chances get slimmer and hence, they need to come up with better strategies.
