Reasons behind Mumbai Indians’ resurgence in IPL 2025

IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians have won four consecutive games — here’s what’s fueling their comeback.

The Mumbai Indians’ (MI) IPL 2025 campaign is beginning to look a lot like their championship-winning seasons of the past. Known for their slow starts and dramatic comebacks, MI have once again found momentum at the right time.

After managing just one win in their first four games, they have stormed back with four victories in their last five matches. This turnaround mirrors some of their most famous campaigns, like 2010 and 2019, where building momentum in the second half of the tournament proved crucial.

MI are currently placed fifth in the points table with five wins and 10 points in 9 games. Three more wins in next five encounters will see them qualify for the playoffs without depending on others.

Rohit Sharma has been MI’s biggest key
One of the biggest reasons behind MI’s resurgence has been the return to form of Rohit Sharma. After a poor start with just 38 runs in the first four games, the MI skipper has smashed 190 runs in the next four, including a couple of 70+ scores. His regained fluency at the top has been vital, setting strong foundations for the rest of the batting line-up.

With Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks also hitting form, Rohit has been able to play with more freedom, knowing he has dependable partners alongside him. Their aggressive starts have allowed MI to consistently put pressure on opposition bowlers right from the powerplay.

Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav build a formidable middle order batting core and all of them have showcased what they have in their arsenal whenever they have got the opportunities.

Earlier in the tournament, MI were failing to cross the finishing line as they struggled in the death overs with both ball and bat, but with Rohit firing at the top and Bumrah getting into the groove, they have managed to rectify that loophole and march towards the playoffs spot.

Bowlers have fired on all cylinders
Another major factor has been the performance of Mumbai’s bowling unit. The pace trio of Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Jasprit Bumrah has started to fire together, providing breakthroughs early in the innings.

Their ability to pick up wickets inside the powerplay has allowed the likes of Mitchell Santner to dominate in the middle overs, making MI’s attack look complete. The comeback of Bumrah in particular has been a huge boost, with his pinpoint accuracy and control proving to be the X-factor once again.

Pandya has been MI’s star all-rounder
Hardik Pandya’s all-round contributions have also been significant. Although not always grabbing headlines, he has chipped in with both bat and ball, providing MI with the balance they needed. His ability to finish innings strongly and bowl crucial overs has taken some load off the frontline bowlers and middle-order batters.

Furthermore, the experienced core has been complemented well by young talents, and even players like Santner have found their rhythm once the team’s main bowlers have put the opposition under pressure.

While Mumbai Indians’ batting looks dangerous again with Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav leading the charge, their bowling has regained the lethal touch that won them multiple titles.

As Kieron Pollard rightly pointed out, it’s not about when you win but about building momentum — and Mumbai seem to be peaking at just the right time. With confidence back in the camp, MI are once again looking like strong contenders to go deep into IPL 2025.
