IPL 2025: MI’s middle overs batting prowess separates them from the rest

IPL 2025: Suryakumar Yadav’s 359 runs in the middle overs (7–15) key to Mumbai Indians’ dominance in that phase this season.

Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time champions have gone from strength to strength in this tournament. After a lackluster start where they had just won one of their first 5, MI turned things around by winning the next 6 on the bounce in IPL 2025

So, what clicked for them was that they had a remarkable change in their fortunes. For starters their batting clicked unlike in the last few seasons, especially in the middle overs.

Here are the top 5 teams with respect to their performances with the bat in the middle overs (7-15) in IPL 2025.

If we take a look at the above list, the teams that have done well in the middle-overs phase as a batting unit are currently in contention for the playoff spots except for RCB. Hence, it is important for teams to keep on looking for runs even after fielding restrictions are lifted.

MI has the third best strike rate for a team in this phase till now, and this is one of the reasons why they are well placed in the points table.

So, what about the individual contributions in this phase for MI?

While LSG’s Nicholas Pooran leads the pack for batters (249 runs at a SR of 211.02) in overs 6-15 with a minimum of 150 runs, Suryakumar Yadav is the second-best batter overall in terms of strike rate and the numero uno for MI.

Suryakumar a master batter in the middle overs?
SKY has been a standout for MI in this period, having amassed 359 runs (the most) he has scored in this IPL. This has come at an astounding SR of close to 180. The right-hander has also struck 16 sixes in this phase and only Pooran (22) has more. Batting at No.3 or 4, the India T20 skipper is the glue that holds this batting order together and his success in this phase is translated to the success of the team.

Thanks to his unconventional ways of scoring runs, Surya is difficult to set fields and bowl balls to as a bowler. His “V” area is different to that of the conventional batters and found success while some of the outrageous shots that we will ever see.  These traits make him a special player and he has taken up the mantle of an enforcer for MI to near perfection.

Mumbai Indians Deep batting line-up
Yes, Surya has been Mumbai’s best batter this season, but the likes of Ryan Rickleton, Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya or Naman Dhir have all stepped up during different stages of this tournament. The aforementioned batters all have an aggregate of 150 or more in this IPL.

The luxury of batting this long and all of them being in decent form, makes sure batters play their game freely and there is little pressure. The fact that a batter like Corbin Bosch bats at No.8 speaks volumes of how strong MI batting unit is. This goes to show MI has batting firepower throughout and potential to smash at each & every phase of the innings.

Another thing that sets them apart from the other teams Is the left-right batting combinations throughout.

Conclusion
With almost everyone chipping in, MI seems a complete unit, and this has resulted in them dominating the proceedings in IPL 2025. If they continue this rich vein of form, MI will be unstoppable going into the business end of the tournament.
