IPL 2025, LSG vs SRH, Highlights: Sunrisers defeat Lucknow; latter knocked out of tournament

IPL 2025, LSG vs SRH, Highlights: Sunrisers Hyderabad outclass Lucknow Super Giants to crush their playoff hopes.

Brief Scores: SRH 206/4 (Abhishek 59, Heinrich Klassen 47, Digvesh Rathi 2/37) beat LSG 205/7 (Mitchell Marsh 65, Aiden Markram 61, Eshan Malinga 2/28) by six wickets.

Put into bat first on a batting-friendly surface, during the 61st game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) posted 205/7 in their allotted 20 overs. The 115-run opening stand between two half-centurions, Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, laid a strong platform. Nicholas Pooran clubbed 45 runs in 26 balls to offer them late firepower.

Abhishek Sharma’s crazy knock of 59 runs in 20 balls gave them a strong start to the innings. Heinrich Klassen contributed with 47 runs in 28 deliveries at a strike rate of 167.85. Their strong middle order helped Sunrisers Hyderabad in chasing the target by six wickets in hand.

Highlights from the LSG vs SRH game, IPL 2025

LSG Top order contributed, but the contribution lacked from the middle order
One of the reasons for Lucknow’s success in this season has been the contributions from both openers. And they carried the same momentum even after the restart of the event.

Mitchell Marsh attained his fifty in just 28 balls and ended with 65 runs in 39 balls. The right-handed batter collected six boundaries and four sixes at a strike rate of 166.67. Meanwhile, Markram notched up his fifth fifty of the IPL 2025, finishing with 61 runs in 38 balls.

Despite the 115-run opening stand, Lucknow’s middle order failed to contribute. Most of the batters couldn’t read the slower deliveries as he gave the catch back to Eshan Malinga. Nicholas Pooran was the only contributor with 45 runs in 26 balls, shouldering six boundaries and one six.

None of Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, or Shardul Thakur could get into double figures. The home side got just 90 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the last 57 balls, since the dismissal of Marsh. At one point, when they looked good to cross the 240-run mark, they fell short by nearly 35 runs.

Abhishek Sharma’s innings was a game changer
In the first two overs of the chase, Abhishek Sharma faced just one ball to open his account. But the southpaw didn’t hold back before thumping Akash Deep for an effortless six. He danced down the track against William O’Rourke to lift the Kiwi pacer over covers for another six.

Rishabh Pant brought Avesh Khan into the attack, but Abhishek punched him for two successive boundaries. The seventh over was a mad one against Ravi Bishnoi. Sharma drilled the leg spinner for four consecutive sixes to celebrate his second half-century of the IPL 2025.

Finally, Digvesh Rathi foxed the opener with a googly that darted outside off. The 24-year-old, who couldn’t reach the pitch of the delivery, went back to the pavilion for 59 runs in 20 balls at a strike rate of 295.

Eshan Malinga’s 2-28 proved to be vital in a run feast
In a ground where Marsh and Markram smashed a 115-run opening stand, the Sri Lanka pacer, Eshan Malinga, made a huge impact with 2/28 in four overs.

On the last ball of the 12th over, Pant tried his best, but his struggle with the bat refused to leave him. Malinga went pace off and aimed for the yorkers on leg. The southpaw leaned forward but got a leading edge as the pacer grabbed the return catch.

Later, Malinga went full and wide. Badoni looked to go aerial over the off side but found the toe end of the bat. Nitish Kumar Reddy ran to catch a seamer. His four overs made a huge impact in the result.

Way forward
With the fourth group-stage victory of the IPL 2025, Sunrisers Hyderabad stayed at the eight position in the points table. They are already out of the event, but has created distance from the bottom of the table. They will fly to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for their penultimate clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 23.

On the other hand, this defeat is a body blow for the Super Giants, who are now eliminated from the season. It’s another year where they have failed to remain calm in crunch situations.

The Rishabh Pant-led side will visit the Narendra Modi Stadium for their next fixture against the Gujarat Titans (GT). That encounter will take place on May 22, 2025.
