The win helped Gujarat jump to the top of points table, while Delhi remained at fifth place.

Highlights from DC vs GT game, IPL 2025

Versatile KL Rahul showed his utility as opener
KL Rahul opened the innings for Delhi after having batted at No 4 this IPL season. He played multiple roles during his knock of 65-ball 112 not out. He first helped the team to a steady start taking the score to 45/1 in the powerplay.

He then anchored the innings and finally finished off the innings on a high. He did most of the scoring in powerplay, scoring 36 runs out of the team’s total of 45 runs.

In the middle-overs, Rahul consolidated the innings and still kept up with a strike rate of over 200, scoring 50 runs off 27 balls between overs 7 to 15. In the death overs, he accelerated, scoring 36 runs off the 12 balls he faced between overs 16 to 20. Overall, it was a well-paced innings by Rahul to help his team post a total close to 200.

What was noteworthy during this phase was how he handled Kagiso Rabada’s bowling, scoring two sixes and a four off his very first over. The shot of the day was Rahul hitting a full-length delivery onto the seventh stump off Rabada’s bowling over mid-off for a six. Rahul initially respected Prasidh Krishan, the highest wicket-taker of the season so far, before collecting two fours and a six off the bowler in his last two overs.

GT openers make a mockery of the chase
Gujarat openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan batted with complete assurance and went about the chase of 200 runs clinically. They ensured they didn’t let any Delhi bowlers settle down to a rhythm. The two collected a four and a six in the first over bowled by the skipper, Axar Patel.

Sudharsan then unleashed his range of strokemaking, smashing a six and three fours off T Natarajan’s bowling in the second over of the innings. The openers helped the team reach their fifty in just 4.2 overs setting the platform for an easy chase.

Post powerplay, the two worked in ones and twos before getting back to scoring the big hits. While Sudharsan dealt mostly in boundaries, Gill cracked sixes at will. Sudharsan reached his ton with a straight six off Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling. Sudharsan cracked 12 fours and four sixes for his 61-ball 108 not out. On the other hand, Gill made a 53-ball 93 not out with three fours and seven sixes.

Delhi’s bowling combination needs a re-look
Delhi fielded a new pace bowling combination against the Gujarat Titans. They had Dushmantha Chameera, who was bowling for the first time for Delhi since the match against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 29.

Similarly, T Natarajan and Mustafizur Rahman rolled their arms for the first time this season. Their struggles against the Gujarat openers were apparent as they had not bowled in tandem before.

The likes of Mitchell Starc and Mukesh Kumar were missed dearly for this match. Thanks to the lack of penetration from Delhi bowlers, Gujarat feasted on the wayward bowling of Delhi pacers and got off to a great start. With no pressure from the pacers, spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam found it difficult to settle into a rhythm and put pressure on the opponents.

Eventually, Delhi’s bowling was taken apart, and a comfortable 200-chase was recorded against them. Delhi have to get their bowling combination right if they hope to win matches in the business end of the tournament and qualify for the play-offs.

The way forward
This crucial win has helped Gujarat Titans jumped to the top of the table with 18 points and qualify for play-offs. They still have two matches left, and would look to win both of them to end with a top two finish in the points table. Gujarat next play Lucknow on May 22. The loss had posed a blow to Delhi’s play-off chances. But if they win their last two matches and hope other results go their way, they can still make it to the play-offs. Delhi next face Mumbai away on May 21.
