Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashes second-fastest IPL ton: Breakdown of a blitzkrieg

Vaibhav Suryavanshi creates history as the youngest and fastest Indian to smash an IPL century, reaching the landmark in just 35 balls.

In a night that will go down as one of the most memorable in IPL history, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name into the record books with a stunning century for Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Gujarat Titans (GT) at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Playing just his third IPL game, the southpaw produced a jaw-dropping 101 off 38 balls, becoming the youngest centurion in men’s T20 cricket and smashing the second-fastest hundred in the history of the IPL.

A knock for the ages from Vaibhav Suryavanshi
Suryavanshi’s knock was nothing short of a dream. Chasing a mammoth 210-run target, he launched an all-out assault on the GT bowling attack right from the second ball he faced. He cleared his front leg, trusted his swing, and sent the ball soaring into the stands with astonishing ease. Suryavanshi raced to his maiden IPL century in just 35 balls, reaching the milestone in style with a pulled six over mid-wicket off Rashid Khan — arguably one of the finest T20 bowlers in the world.

His 101-run blitz included 11 massive sixes and seven boundaries, with a whopping 94 runs coming just in boundaries. His strokeplay was a delightful mix of power and flair, highlighted by impressive wrist work and clean hitting. From slicing Mohammed Siraj for six in the opening over to dismantling the experienced Ishant Sharma for 28 runs in an over, Suryavanshi spared none.

What stood out was Suryavanshi’s absolute disregard for the reputation of the bowlers he faced. Be it Rashid Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Ishant Sharma, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, or Afghanistan all-rounder Karim Janat, Suryavanshi backed himself and played his shots fearlessly. He treated Janat with particular disdain, taking him for 30 runs in a single over, with a sequence of 6, 4, 6, 4, 4, 6 — one of the most brutal overs ever bowled in the IPL.

Records broken by Vaibhav Suryavanshi
In addition to becoming the youngest male cricketer to score a T20 century, breaking Vijay Zol’s record, Suryavanshi also set a host of IPL records:

  • Second-fastest IPL century: 35 balls (only behind Chris Gayle’s 30-ball ton in 2013)
  • Fastest IPL hundred by an India batter, surpassing Yusuf Pathan’s 37-ball effort in 2010
  • Joint-most sixes by an India batter in an IPL innings: 11
  • Fastest fifty of IPL 2025 (17 balls)
  • Highest opening partnership for Rajasthan Royals: 166 runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal

Rajasthan Royals’ talent factory
This masterclass from Vaibhav is yet another feather in the cap for the inaugural edition champions, Rajasthan Royals, a franchise known for nurturing young Indian talent. Whether it was spotting the raw potential of Sanju Samson, grooming Riyan Parag, or polishing the natural flair of Yashasvi Jaiswal, RR has consistently invested in youth. In Vaibhav, they seem to have unearthed another gem. The Royals had acquired him for ₹1.10 crore during the mega auction and nurtured him at their High-Performance Centre — a move that now looks visionary.

A confidence booster beyond measure
While this may be just the beginning of Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s IPL journey, the impact of this knock is far-reaching. To conquer an attack boasting a combined 694 international caps at 14 years of age is more than just talent — it’s a statement. He didn’t just play an innings; he lived a dream that millions of youngsters visualise growing up.

As he walked back to the pavilion after his dismissal in the 12th over, every Gujarat Titans player acknowledged his brilliance. In a heart-warming moment, Rajasthan head coach Rahul Dravid — seated in a wheelchair — stood up to give the prodigy a standing ovation. It was a sign that Indian cricket may have just found its next superstar.

With a fearless approach, a clear head, and the backing of a team that believes in building stars, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s rise might just be the start of something truly special.
