Brief scores: India 587 (Gill 269, R Jadeja 89, Bashir 3/167) & 427/6d (Gill 161, R Jadeja 69, Tongue 2/93) beat England 407 (Smith 184*, Brook 158, Siraj 6/70) & 271 (Smith 88, Deep 6/99) by 336 runs.

Shubhman Gill, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep helped India etch history as they defeated England by a massive margin of 336 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston. Happy faces were seen in India’s dugout as they made a strong comeback after a defeat in the first Test.

Let’s take a look at how the two sessions progressed on Day 5 of the second Eng vs Ind Test of the 2025 series at Edgbaston.

India scalp three crucial wickets in first session
The first session of the final day started a bit late as rain intruded the game at Edgbaston. Later, when the covers were off, the weather remained heavy, signalling threat for the England batter.

Akash Deep gave India the perfect start with two crucial wickets, one of Ollie Pope and the other of Harry Brook. The pacer from Bengal looked impressive as he smartly trapped the batters with his variations.

For instance, to dismiss Pope, he generated extra bounce and later he bowled a sharp inswinger to get rid of Brook. The secret to his success was the firm wrist position and the use of crease; he executed both these dimensions perfectly.

Later, after the early strikes, Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith showed some resilience but Washington Sundar eventually took the former’s wicket, just at the stroke of lunch. Overall, India owned the session as they took three crucial runs and leaked only 81 runs.

Akash Deep brings up first five-wicket haul
Just like the first innings, Jamie Smith was getting under India’s skin as he was scoring runs from one end. His calculative risks were pinching India’s bowling line up.

However, the star of the day, Akash Deep, decided to step up and complete his five wicket haul. He bowled a slower- short of a good length ball which Smith eventually mistimed. He was his team’s lone warrior as no other player passed the 50+ mark.

After his dismissal, England’s batting line up had no other player to bank on, and hence, the men in blue winded up the innings with a combined effort.

What’s next
Session by session, India pulled the scales in their favour and eventually won the second match by 336 runs. The series now levels at 1-1 and It’ll be interesting to see how both the teams come up with a fresh plan at Lord’s. It is highly possible that both the teams instigate their prime bowler- Jofra Archer and Jasprit Bumrah in the playing XI. Overall, it’ll be exciting to see how the Bazballers come back in the third match after this massive defeat.
