India Eves began their World Cup 2025 campaign against Sri Lanka with a win on Tuesday at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Coming into the match, the two sides had met 35 times, with India dominating the rivalry by winning 31 games, while Sri Lanka managed just three victories.

Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and opted to field, putting the Harmanpreet Kaur-led India into bat. India reached 43 for 1 at the end of 10 overs before rain halted play at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

India opted for a balanced attack, fielding three frontline spinners alongside two pacers to exploit the conditions in Guwahati. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, strengthened their batting by going in with seven specialist batters, banking on depth in their lineup to counter India’s bowling strength.

Talking Points from IND vs SL, Women’s World Cup 2025

Deepti Sharma-Amanjot’s 103-run stand for 7th wicket
Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur stitched together a 103-run partnership for the seventh wicket, rescuing India from a tricky position. The stand not only steadied the innings but also provided crucial momentum in the latter half. It went down as the second-highest seventh -wicket partnership for India in Women’s World Cup history, underlining the pair’s composure under pressure.

Deepti Sharma, Sneh Raha and Sree Charani didn’t let the game slip
Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana ensured the game never slipped out of India’s hands with disciplined spells. After being hit in her first two overs, Deepti bounced back brilliantly, striking in her third to remove the well-set Chamari Athapaththu (43), before adding the scalps of Kavisha Dilhari (15) and Anushka Sanjeewani (6).

Rana provided strong support from the other end, dismissing Nilakshi de Silva (35) and Sugandika Kumari (10), while Sree Charani chipped in with two key wickets, removing Harshitha Samarawickrama (29) and Achini Kulasuriya (17), further tightening India’s grip on the game.

    IND vs SL Match summary
The Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati is known to favour batters and has often produced high-scoring contests. But India’s innings did not find rhythm on the day. Following the interruption, the contest was reduced to 47 overs a side. With overs shortened, India looked desperate to accelerate and build momentum, while Sri Lanka sensed an opportunity to strike. The visitors’ bowlers maintained pressure and, as the innings progressed, they found the breakthroughs they were searching for.

After the early dismissal of their in-form Smriti Mandhana for just 8 runs, the hosts suffered a major setback in the 26th over, losing Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur in quick succession. It was far from the start India would have hoped for in their home World Cup campaign. For Sri Lanka, left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera stood out with four wickets, breaking partnerships and stalling India’s momentum. But a 103-run stand between Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma revived the innings, with Amanjot making a fearless 57 after four reprieves, and Deepti Sharma held the scoring game together.

The surface offered turn, and Sri Lanka’s batters struggled to come to terms with the Indian spinners. Deepti Sharma delivered a fine all-round show, scoring a crucial half-century and picking up three wickets in the second innings. India tightened their grip on the contest by removing Sri Lanka’s star batter Chamari Athapaththu (43) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (29), leaving the visitors on the back foot.
