Why is Jasprit Bumrah struggling in Asia Cup 2025? Three wickets, 92 runs conceded across three matches raise concerns.

When India announced their 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025, the first name in the playing eleven was Jasprit Bumrah. Everyone was assured of the premier pacer’s excellent performance. There was no doubt about it. He came into the tournament spending a month’s break after the end of the away five-match Test series against England.
However, the T20 event hasn’t gone as anticipated for Bumrah. He lacked the right line and length in nearly two weeks of the competition. And the Super 4 clash against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium was a perfect example of that.
Jasprit Bumrah’s irregular Asia Cup 2025 in overall T20I records’ comparison
In three innings of the Asia Cup 2025, Bumrah has picked up only three wickets at an economy rate of over eight. His average has also gone over 30. Hard to believe, but he has leaked 12 boundaries in this tournament so far, which is the most for India. Besides that, he has also been smashed for three sixes.
In overall T20Is, the Gujarat bowler has gone for just over two boundaries per inning. That rate has gone up to four in this event. In case of sixes, it’s around one in two innings. That rate has increased to one six per innings in this tournament.

For the powerplay (1-6) overs, the economy of just over six has nearly touched eight in this Asia Cup 2025. In three innings, he has already leaked 10 boundaries. The difference of 10 in the average department is also another eye-catching aspect.

In case of the death (16-20) overs, Bumrah’s economy of 11.50 is terrible in this competition. A T20I career economy of 7.08 has crossed 11 for this tournament. The veteran has been smashed for just 57 boundaries in his 60 overall T20Is. But things haven’t gone smoothly for him at this event.

Bumrah looking completely off colour. In fact he hasn't been himself right through this tournament.

Jasprit Bumrah’s predictable T20 lengths bring his downfall
During the first Super 4 fixture, Jasprit Bumrah was smashed for two consecutive fours in his opening over. Fakhar Zaman flicked the leg-side ball before dancing down the track to clear mid-off. Sahibzada Farhan was quick to stuck the pacer through square leg easily, as if he knew the length even on the eve of the game. The 31-year-old tried the slower ball and ended with a dipping full toss.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav used his third successive over inside the power play. And it had its toll. Farhan cleared the front leg to smash through mid-wicket for another boundary. Bumrah’s deliveries continued to travel even in his last over as Faheem Ashraf swung hard to get a six over fine leg.
Bumrah’s hard lengths in this tournament haven’t earned much success. Batters have been able to time him properly around the park. In the three innings, he has bowled several full tosses, which isn’t a sign of a champion bowler.
Meanwhile, India’s captain isn’t fussed about these issues at all. And his comment, ‘That’s fine, he’s not a robot, he will have a bad day someday,’ proves that.
This could be because of his workload or perhaps being back in T20Is after a long time. Bumrah played a 20-over game for India after more than a year since the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa. However, this won’t be the lone reason. He was part of the IPL for the Mumbai Indians (MI) a few months ago. And his form was outstanding in that event, with 18 wickets in 12 innings at an economy rate of 6.67.
Hardik Pandya used Bumrah differently for Mumbai from how Rohit used to. Two overs at the start, one in the middle, and one in the death were the construction of his spell. In this tournament, Surya gave him three overs in the powerplay and one in the death.
India are unbeaten in this competition at the moment. For them to qualify for the final and win successive trophies, the Ahmedabad-born will need to come at his best. Moreover, the T20 World Cup 2026 will start knocking on the door. And, undoubtedly, Bumrah will need to lead the pace attack.
