After Team India were knocked out of the 2022 World T20 by England in the semi-final, the Men in Blue turned a new chapter in their T20I game. They chose to rewrite how they approach the shortest format of the game, and incorporated an aggressive batting approach.

Since that embarrassing exit from the 2022 World T20, India batters have dominated all phases of a T20I game. November 10, 2022 onwards (World T20 semis between India vs England), India batters, among Test-playing nations, have been in top two in terms of scoring the most runs or the best strike rate in powerplay, middle-overs and death overs.

Here’s a look at the stats on how dominating India have been in all phases of a T20I game.

Overs 1-6 from November 11, 2022 till Aug 27, 2025 (only Test-playing nations)

During this phase, India have scored the second-most runs, and boast the second-best strike-rate among Test playing nations.

India, WI dominate batting charts
India and West Indies have been the top two teams, scoring the most runs, having the best strike rate and average during the various phases of a T20I game since November 2022.

Although West Indies have struggled in Tests and ODIs, their performance in the shortest format has been exceptional. They have been giving a tough fight to India in terms of batting performances since November 2022 in T20Is.

However, the surprise package has been Zimbabwe who have been in the top five during these phases of a T20I game. New Zealand and Pakistan are the other two teams in the top five. Australia, England and South Africa have to catch up to meet the standards set by India and West Indies.

India follow a pattern in T20Is
A look at India’s strike rate since November 2022 shows that India have not been as aggressive in powerplay, but instead have built up the innings during this phase, before accelerating in middle-overs and then finishing in style at the death.

Surprisingly, Yashasvi Jaiswal has dominated the powerplay since November 2022, and yet he fails to find a place in the Asia Cup squad. He has also scored the most fours and sixes during this phase, and his strike rate (166.45) is just second to Abhishek Sharma’s 179.17.

Sanju Samson, who has been opening the batting with Abhishek Sharma since 2024 World T20, has an underwhelming strike rate of 135.86 in powerplay. However, it is likely because Abhishek is going hammer and tongs during this phase, while Samson is playing second fiddle. A look at Samson’s strike rate in middle-overs shows his different approach during this phase.

Samson’s strike rate jumps to 187.43 in middle-overs from 135.86 in powerplay, and it could be because spinners come into play during this phase, and Samson loves to milk their bowling.

Suryakumar Yadav dominates this phase as he comes down to bat at No 4, and boasts of scoring the most runs (707) at the second-best strike rate of 152.70, and a whopping 60 fours, and 34 sixes during this phase.
