Change in tactics based on conditions is incredibly important in different ICC events. But it’s most important for teams to learn from past mistakes. England made the blunder of picking four seamers against India for their semifinal clash in the last ICC T20 World Cup in Guyana. And, on one of the most spin-friendly venues in world cricket, their pacers leaked 120 runs in 12 overs.

Moeen Ali went unused before Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav ran through England’s middle order. From that occasion, England have certainly learnt under Harry Brook’s leadership. In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, they have used the most overs of spin (72.4) in their team’s history in an edition of the event.

England master spin bowling under Harry Brook in T20 WC 2026
Under Jos Buttler, England lacked the trust in their spinners like most of their previous captains. It’s an art to operate spin in various phases of the 20-over format, especially in the modern era of match-ups. Batters’ incredible power on flat surfaces are yet another added element. Therefore, it becomes important to choose the period and situation of bringing spin into the attack.

Buttler, seven months after the T20 WC 2024, arrived in India with a battery of pacers and experienced a 4-1 thrashing. It proved to be his last T20I series as captain, leading to a nightmarish Champions Trophy 2025 exit. But once Brook was appointed, England decided to master the spin attack.

England earn success in T20 WC 2026 with Harry Brook’s spin mantra
Brook has an indigent record against spinners in T20Is. The right-handed batter has managed only 297 runs against spin in 20 innings at an average of 24.8, besides getting dismissed 12 times.

Meanwhile, in the same period, he has collected 290 runs in 15 T20I innings against pace at an average of 41.4 and a blistering strike rate of 183.50. Despite this record, he believes in spin bowling, which is puzzling yet advantageous for England.

Brook, in his first experience as the short-term captain in The Hundred, used the same spin mantra for the Northern Superchargers. He used Adil Rashid and Mitchell Santner regularly for the 100-ball fixtures. For the national side, he has got the experience of Rashid, the two left-arm spinners- Jacob Bethell and Liam Dawson, along with the golden arm of Will Jacks.

Conditions also favoured England’s part-time spinners in Pallekele and Colombo for their Super Eight fixtures. They bowled 37.4 overs of spin at an economy rate of only 7.12 and collected 18 wickets at an average of 14.89.

Brook also trusted Jacks to bowl the second over of their 146-run defense against Sri Lanka and got results immediately. The off-spinner picked up two wickets in his second over and returned with magical figures of 3/22 in four overs.

England have an exceptional T20I record of 14 T20I wins in 18 games under Brook. But, they have a spin average of 31.20 in 18 overs at the Wankhede Stadium in this T20 WC 2026. It remains to be seen if the same mantra proves effective this time.

Moreover, they will be up against the hosts India in the semifinal clash on March 5. Regardless of what happens, they will have a new approach to work with spinners.
