India will play England on March 5 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the second semi-final of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The two teams will be facing each other for the first time in the tournament. However, the two teams have played T20I bilateral series and are aware of their strengths and weaknesses. The last time the two teams played in a T20I series was last year, when India defeated England 4-1. There are a few battles within the battle between the two teams that would make the semi-finals a mouth-watering clash.

Here are the key battles to watch for in IND vs ENG Semi Final clash

Jofra Archer vs India’s top-order batters
Jofra Archer would be given the license to attack  India’s top-order batters, who have looked vulnerable after early collapses in recent matches. Archer will be up against India’s opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Samson is unlikely to hold back from taking risks against Archer as he will look to ensure India get off to a strong start. However, the numbers favour the England pacer, Archer has dismissed Samson three times in 23 balls in T20Is while conceding just 25 runs.

On the other hand, Abhishek enjoys good success against Archer, scoring 61 runs off 33 balls from the pacer in T20Is at a strike rate of 184.8. India would also take confidence from Ishan Kishan’s success against Archer, as he has not been dismissed by the England pacer in 23 balls in T20 cricket, scoring 39 runs at a strike rate of 169.6. However, Archer’s trump card,  the short ball targeting the ribs, could make life difficult for India’s top-order batters.

Adil Rashid vs India batters
Leg-spinner Adil Rashid may be asked to bowl an over or two in powerplay, but he would necessarily be used in the middle overs to stem the flow of runs by picking up a wicket or two. Up against India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav, Rashid enjoys mixed success, dismissing him twice in T20Is. But Suryakumar Yadav has also plundered 53 runs in 30 balls at a strike rate of 176.7 against Rashid.

Pushed down the order to No 5, Tilak Varma does not enjoy much success against Rashid, getting dismissed only once but managing just 15 runs out of 22 balls. Rashid has taken 11 wickets in this tournament, and has form behind him to trouble India’s middle-order.

Bumrah and Arshdeep against England’s top-order batters
Considering the enormity of the occasion, India may bowl their two frontline pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, together in the powerplay. The two will be up against Phil Salt and Jos Buttler. All four of these players have played a lot against each other in the IPL. But come the semi-final, they won’t give an inch to each other. Buttler has met with failures against Bumrah, who has dismissed the England batter twice while giving away just 10 runs in 14 balls. Arshdeep, however, has failed to dismiss Buttler even once in 30 balls while giving away 44 runs in T20Is.

Bumrah also enjoys an upper hand against Salt, dismissing him once in three balls while giving away just one run. Arshdeep, too, has dismissed Salt twice while giving away 13 runs in 16 balls.

However, the biggest task at hand for Bumrah and Arshdeep would be to dismiss the in-form England captain Harry Brook, who will walk to bat at No 3. Bumrah is yet to dismiss Brook in T20Is but has not conceded a single run in five balls. Arshdeep has bowled four balls to Brook in T20Is without dismissing him. Brook poses the biggest challenge to India, and it rests on Bumrah-Arshdeep to neutralize his threat.

Clash of all-rounders
Both England and India have enough all-rounders in their squads to bail them out with both bat and ball. Their all-rounders have performed well in this tournament. However, England’s Will Jacks poses the biggest obstacle for India in their quest to reach the final. Jacks is in the form of his life and has already won four Player of the Match awards in this tournament. He can be relied upon with both bat and ball to win matches for his side. The other all-rounders, Sam Curran and Rehan Ahmed, are also in prime form and could come hard at the India bowlers in the death overs.

However, India’s all-rounders have also been in good touch, especially Hardik Pandya, who has impressed with both bat and ball. He might face Jacks sometime during the innings in the semis, and could be counted on to take apart Jacks’ bowling to give India the best chance to shut the door on England. Shivam Dube and Axar Patel have also contributed towards the team’s success this season. The semis could just be decided on how the all-rounders perform on the particular day.

Battles of captaincy
The semi-final will also be a battle of captaincy. Harry Brook has shown strong leadership skills and led from the front with a century against Pakistan in the Super Eights. Suryakumar Yadav has also played a few match-saving knocks in the tournament, but has not been consistent. However, Suryakumar has backed his players, who have responded well to his leadership. Eventually, it may come down to how the captains keep their cool under pressure situations to swing the momentum in their team’s favour.

With the stage set at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, both India and England will enter the semi-final knowing that a place in the 2026 T20 World Cup final is just one win away. The contest promises high-intensity cricket with several individual battles likely to shape the outcome. If India’s bowlers can strike early and contain England’s explosive batting lineup, the hosts could gain the upper hand. However, England’s depth in both batting and all-round options makes them equally dangerous. Ultimately, the team that handles pressure better and wins these key on-field battles will take a step closer to lifting the trophy.
