T20 World Cup 2026, IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah rises to the occasion with a clinical bowling performance against England.

Decoding Jasprit Bumrah, a “once-in-a-generation bowler,” is no easy task. He is a master of slower balls, pinpoint yorkers, and accurate line-and-length bowling. He is a magician capable of conjuring wins from matches that seem to be drifting towards defeat. Bumrah delivered yet another such performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup semifinal against England. But before diving there, let’s try to understand how Bumrah has consistently played the superhero with the ball across formats over the past decade.
Wrist work & sling-arm action
Many of Bumrah’s magical deliveries can be credited to the way he uses his wrist at the point of release. Whether it is rolling his fingers for deceptive slower balls or using subtle wrist positions to make the ball move away after pitching and square the batter up for a bowled or LBW dismissal, his control is remarkable.
Using the wrist effectively in fast bowling requires immense practice, and Bumrah has mastered this art. Combined with his unique sling-arm action, he generates extra zip off the surface, often leaving batters with very little time to react. By the time a batter tries to adjust, the ball has already done its job.
Practice bowling yorker-length consistently
It is not sheer talent or a fluke that allows a bowler to deliver unhittable yorkers ball after ball. In fact, Bumrah puts in immense hard work to perfect his yorkers and dipping low full tosses. Reports often highlight his intense practice sessions, where he places boots on either side of the batting crease and repeatedly bowls yorkers in an attempt to displace them. These sessions can last for 45 minutes or more.
It is through such gruelling training that Bumrah has developed into one of the most consistent yorker specialists in the game. The effort behind the scenes explains how he was able to deliver six near-unhittable yorkers in the 18th over against England in the T20 World Cup semifinal, a spell that ultimately swung the match in India’s favour.
“His [Bumrah’s] action is so unique that you struggle to pick up how quickly the ball comes out of his wrist. It’s a skill but it is also to do with the mystery of his action. The point of difference makes it really hard to line him up in terms of if he misses,” said former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis.

Great cricketing brain & game awareness
Bumrah is not just about bowling unplayable yorkers, slower balls, clever variations, or maintaining a consistent line and length. Over the years, he has also developed a sharp cricketing brain that helps him judge precisely what type of delivery to bowl to a particular batter. He reads a batter’s mindset, style of play, strengths, weaknesses, and the match situation with remarkable clarity.
For instance, knowing that England captain Harry Brook enjoys pace on the ball to play his shots, Bumrah delivered a perfectly disguised slower ball with his very first delivery to Brook in the semifinal. The batter mistimed the shot, and Axar Patel completed what many called the catch of the tournament. Understanding what to bowl to different types of batters is a key reason behind Bumrah’s success.
Another aspect that stands out is Bumrah’s economy rate. He forces batters to play dot balls or settle for singles and the occasional double, as his yorker-length deliveries rarely allow them to get underneath the ball and play big shots. In the semifinal, Bumrah finished with an economy rate of 8.25, while the other India bowlers collectively conceded nearly 13 runs per over, with the overall match run rate around 12.5.
Therefore, Sanju Samson had a valid point when he chose Bumrah as the most deserving Player of the Match. “I think this (player of the match award) should go to him, actually. If he didn’t bowl that way in the death overs, I would not be standing here,” Samson said.
Instances of Bumrah’s magic
Bumrah has proved that he is not a one-match or one-spell wonder. He has the rare ability to repeat his heroics time and again, cementing his status as a modern-day legend. Here’s a look at some of Bumrah’s top bowling performances where his brilliance truly came to the fore.
In a 500 runs game, my Man of the match is Jasprit Bumrah. Economy of 8.25. HE WAS THE DIFFERENCE.

2024 T20 World Cup Final
In the summit clash of the previous T20 World Cup, India looked down and out when they had to defend 30 runs off 30 balls. Bumrah conceded just six runs and took one wicket in his final two overs at the death, putting the brakes on the opposition’s chase. His spell ensured that enough runs were left for Hardik Pandya to defend in the final over.
Those two overs were a masterclass in death bowling, especially when the margin for error was minimal. Bumrah relied on hard lengths and tight lines, giving the batters no room to free their arms and score the boundaries.
India vs England 2024 Vizag Test
India were trailing 0–1 in the five-match Test series. England had made a strong start in their first innings after India posted 396, reaching 114/1 and appearing to take control of the game. However, Bumrah produced a brilliant spell on a flat pitch, claiming 6/45 to bowl England out for 253.
One of the standout moments of the series was when Ollie Pope’s stumps were shattered by a toe-crushing yorker from Bumrah — a delivery that perfectly showcased his skill and precision.
India vs England, The Oval ODI 2022
Aided by a pitch that offered bounce and carry, Bumrah produced the spell of his life in the 2022 ODI at The Oval, where he took 6/19 to bowl England out for just 110. He struck twice in his very first over, as England’s top-order batters had no answer to his variety and control.
While England’s batters played for swing, Bumrah cleverly mixed it up by bowling straighter after shaping a few deliveries away. The batters eventually fell into his trap. His first spell read an incredible 5-2-9-4. He later returned to clean up the tail with pinpoint yorkers to complete his six-wicket haul. Bumrah finished with four bowled dismissals and two caught behind by the wicketkeeper.
Over the years, Bumrah has consistently shown why he is rated so highly, delivering performances that often seem to defy normal human limits. Fans will be hoping he unleashes his brilliance once again as India take on New Zealand in the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
