T20 World Cup 2026 Final, IND vs NZ: India’s top three deliver with the bat to secure a historic third T20 World Cup title.

Brief Scores: IND 255-5 (Sanju Samson 89, James Neesham 3/46) beat NZ (Tim Seifert 52, Jasprit Bumrah 4/15) by 96 runs
Player of the Series: Sanju Samson (321 Runs)
Player of the Match: Jasprit Bumrah (4/15)
India’s journey to the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final has been marked by consistency and resilience. After dominating the group stage, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side carried that momentum into the Super Eight stage with convincing performances against top teams.
Their campaign peaked in the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium, where India edged past England in a high-scoring thriller. Contributions from key players such as Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah ensured that India booked their place in the final and kept alive their quest for a third T20 World Cup title.
New Zealand, meanwhile, have enjoyed a composed and disciplined run through the tournament. The Black Caps topped their group with clinical performances and maintained their momentum in the Super Eight stage.
Their biggest statement came in the semi-final, where they defeated South Africa to reach the final. Led by Mitchell Santner, New Zealand have relied on their balanced attack, with the likes of Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and their pace unit delivering crucial performances throughout the competition.
At the toss in Ahmedabad, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner opted to bowl first, hoping to take advantage of the early conditions. The Black Caps made one change to their playing XI, bringing in Jacob Duffy, while Cole McConchie missed out. India, on the other hand, remained unchanged, backing the same XI that defeated England in the semi-final as they aim to finish their impressive campaign with the trophy.

Talking Point: Axar Patel’s powerplay spell and Ishan Kishan’s catching brilliance
India seized early control of New Zealand’s chase through a disciplined powerplay spell from Axar Patel. The left-arm spinner struck crucial blows during the early overs, dismissing Finn Allen and later Glenn Phillips, breaking New Zealand’s momentum when they were attempting to keep up with the steep target. With New Zealand managing 52-3 in the powerplay, Axar’s ability to vary his pace and bowl straight lines ensured the pressure kept building on the Kiwi batters.
India were also outstanding in the field, with Ishan Kishan producing two superb catches that helped tighten their grip on the match. One of the standout moments came when he ran in to take a sharp low catch to dismiss Rachin Ravindra off Jasprit Bumrah.
Later, Kishan also completed a brilliant running catch near the boundary to remove Tim Seifert, juggling the ball momentarily before securing it safely inside the field of play.
Moreover, he also took a catch in Axar Patel’s over to dismiss Daryll Mitchell. Those moments highlighted India’s fielding intensity and complemented Axar’s early breakthroughs as the hosts gained the upper hand in the final.
Samson, Abhishek & Kishan fifties power India to 255-5
India produced a commanding batting performance in the first innings of the T20 World Cup 2026 final, posting 255-5 in 20 overs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad after New Zealand opted to bowl first.
The foundation was laid by Abhishek Sharma, who smashed a rapid 52 off 21 balls, providing India with a blistering start in the powerplay. Sanju Samson then anchored the innings with a fluent 89 off 46 balls, while Ishan Kishan added a quick half-century to keep the scoring rate soaring well above ten runs per over.
However, New Zealand pulled things back slightly in the middle overs when James Neesham struck in a crucial spell, dismissing Samson, Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav in quick succession.
India regained momentum towards the end through Shivam Dube, who provided the finishing flourish with an aggressive cameo, ensuring the hosts crossed the 250-run mark. Despite the late wickets, India finished with a daunting 255-5, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.

Regular wickets mar NZ run-chase
New Zealand began their daunting chase of 256 with positive intent, as openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen looked to attack from the outset. However, India struck early through Axar Patel, who broke the opening momentum in the powerplay.
The Black Caps tried to rebuild through the middle overs, with contributions from Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner, but India’s bowlers maintained tight control of the scoring rate and picked up wickets at regular intervals to keep the required rate climbing.
The pressure eventually proved too much for New Zealand as India’s bowlers tightened the screws in the latter half of the innings. Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel delivered key breakthroughs, while the fielding unit backed them up with sharp catching.
Despite a few late attacking strokes from the lower order, New Zealand fell well short of the target as India closed out the match to secure victory and lift the T20 World Cup 2026 in front of a packed crowd in Ahmedabad.
