In the auction ahead of the fourth season of the SA20, South Africa’s upcoming superstar, Dewald Brevis, created history. Fresh from his recent T20I century against Australia, he became the most expensive player in the league’s history. The right-handed batter pocketed R16.5 million (INR 8.30 crore) to play for the Pretoria Capitals.

Capitals came into the auction with the highest purse of R32.5 million (INR 16.36 crore), followed by Durban’s Super Giants’ R29.5 million (INR 14.85 crore). Johannesburg Super Kings, who extended their bidding for Brevis to R16 million, had a purse of R21.5 million (INR 10.82 crore) in hand. MI Cape Town had the lowest budget of R11.5 million (5.78 crore) with 12 slots to fill.

Dewald Brevis & Aiden Markram hit headlines in SA20 2025/26 auction
South Africa’s veteran left-arm spinner, Keshav Maharaj, was the first player to get sold for R1.70 million (85.55 lakh). With no RTM card available for Durban’s Super Giants, he will feature for the Capitals in the new edition. Their young left-arm pacer, Kwena Maphahaka, moved to Durban for R2.30 million (1.16 crore).

The former Proteas wicket-keeper batter, Quinton de Kock, was sold to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape for R2.40 million (approximately INR 1.21 crore). On this occasion, DSG decided not to use their RTM card. The first biggest bid came from the Super Giants, who signed Aiden Markram, the two-time title-winning captain, for R14 million (INR 7.04 crore).

Johannesburg was keen to get the experienced all-rounder, Wiaan Mulder, into the side. They had a strong bidding war with the Paarl Royals before successfully earning Mulder’s services for R9 million (INR 4.53 crore). Matthew Breetzke returned to the SEC for R6.1 million (INR 3.07 crore) as Durban didn’t exercise their RTM.

MI Cape Town was keen to keep Rassie Van der Dussen with them for R5.2 million (INR 2.62 crore). However, Devon Conway moved out of Wanderers to Kingsmead for a price of R325k (INR 16.35 lakh). Durban also won the bid for Nandre Burger for R6.1 million. However, JSK got their pacer back using the RTM for an increased rate of R6.3 million (INR 3.17 crore).

Pretoria didn’t use their RTM card for the expressive pacer, Anrich Nortje, who moved to Sunrisers, for R5 million (INR 2.52 crore). For Gerald Coetzee, Super Giants won the bidding war for R7.40 million (INR 3.72 crore) against Paarl. Ottneil Baartman became the first player to be signed by the Royals for R5.10 million (INR2.57 crore).

Late in the evening, MICT bagged the services of Dwaine Pretorius for a price of R6.50 million (32.71 lakh). In a three-team bidding war, Pretoria earned Connor Esterhuizen, the top-order batter, for R3.2 million (INR 1.65 crore).

Eastern Cape bought back Jordan Hermann for R550k (INR 27.68 lakh). Hermann recently smashed two successive centuries against New Zealand A in the home unofficial ODI series. After getting ignored in two rounds of the auction, veteran Imran Tahir returned to JSK for R600k (INR 30.19 lakh).

However, the Faf du Plessis-led side couldn’t keep pace bowling all-rounder David Wiese. The current Namibia player went to Durban for R1.3 million (65.44 lakh). On the other hand, Tabraiz Shami moved to MI Cape Town for the base price of R500k (INR 25.17 lakh).

Kumar Sangakkara lifted the paddle for uncapped Sri Lanka all-rounder, Vishen Halambage, for a base price of R200k (INR 10.06 lakh)

Jordan Cox & Temba Bavuma fail to find franchise as SEC announce new captain
Despite his incredible form, The Hundred 2025 winner Jordan Cox, remained unsold. This partial availability due to him being available in ILT20 could be a reason behind that. Maheesh Theekshana failed to grab attention in the auction too.

The new WTC winning captain, Temba Bavuma, couldn’t fetch a franchise either. It might not be surprising, given the 35-year-old has scored only 85 runs in five innings of the league for the Sunrisers. There was an awkward silence in the room when England’s Reece Tropley went unsold.

“Regarding English players, Adi works at Hampshire, and he knows their skills and personality. Happy to have Lewis Gregory from Hampshire. About captaincy, (Tristan) Stubbs will be leading us. Excited to work with us.” Russell Domingo, the SEC assistant coach, said after the auction.
