IPL 2026: Who are the top contenders for the Orange Cap this season based on form, consistency, and batting firepower?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is all set to commence on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opening fixture, which promises to be a high-octane contest.
If the indication from India’s T20 season so far in 2026 – particularly the T20 World Cup – is anything to go by, the new IPL edition promises to be a thrilling one. Fans could witness another tournament where the bat dominates the ball and batting line-ups pile on big totals.
While teams will battle for the prestigious IPL trophy, there is another coveted prize for batters, the Orange Cap, awarded to the tournament’s leading run-scorer. Every batter will hope that his performances contribute to his team’s success. In this piece, we look at some of the contenders who could be in the fray to finish as the leading run-getter in IPL 2026.
Ishan Kishan (SRH)
Ishan Kishan has been one of the most improved batters in the Indian setup in recent times. The left-hander returned to the national team after a two-year absence in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup 2026 and made an immediate impact at the top of the order.
In the 13 innings he has played since returning to the Indian side, Kishan has hammered 532 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 207.00. His run included an impressive campaign in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where he finished as India’s second-highest run-scorer.
The left-hander has put in significant hard work in domestic cricket, particularly over the past year, which explains his success at the highest level. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26, Kishan was the leading run-scorer, smashing 517 runs at a staggering strike rate of 197.32, including two centuries.
Going by his recent form in the shortest format, Ishan Kishan is likely to be one of the contenders to top the run charts in the upcoming IPL edition. In his maiden IPL season for Sunrisers Hyderabad, the 27-year-old managed only 354 runs despite scoring a century in his very first game for SRH. However, even during that lean phase, he maintained an impressive strike rate of 152 throughout the season.
This reflects the positive approach with which he plays the game in any situation. With a truckload of T20 runs under his belt, 1403 since the start of the 2025 IPL, Kishan will head into the upcoming season with confidence. He is expected to feature in the top order for SRH on surfaces that aid stroke-making, and with the licence to attack from the outset, this could be the season where Kishan finally tops the IPL run charts.

Abhishek Sharma (SRH)
Arguably the most destructive T20 batter in the world currently, Abhishek Sharma had a relatively quiet T20 World Cup by his standards. The No. 1-ranked T20I batter managed only 141 runs in eight innings, with two fifty-plus scores in the tournament, including a match-winning 21-ball 52 in the final.
Though his returns in the tournament were below expectations, he remains a proven game-changer. On his day, Abhishek can alter the course of a match and dismantle a bowling attack within a few overs. We have seen this numerous times, both at the international level and in the IPL.
Statistically, the left-hander holds the record for the most runs in T20Is for India in recent years. Despite a modest World Cup campaign, he has scored 1646 T20I runs in 48 innings at a remarkable strike rate of 198.78, including two centuries. His average of nearly 36 highlights that he is not only an explosive batter but also a consistent performer.
In the IPL, Abhishek has crossed the 400-run mark in three of the last four seasons, underlining his reliability in the tournament. If he carries his aggressive form into the upcoming edition, this could well be the season where he finally claims the Orange Cap with another standout campaign.

Aiden Markram (LSG)
The South Africa T20I skipper, Aiden Markram, has been in scintillating form when it comes to batting in the shortest format. Since the start of IPL 2025, the right-hander has had a prolific run, scoring 1353 runs in just 40 innings with a century against his name.
2025 proved to be Markram’s best IPL season yet, as he made 445 runs in 13 outings with the help of five fifty-plus scores. This is the only edition where he went past the 400-run mark in a season and probably the start of his prolific run in the format. In the SA20 2025-26 season that preceded the World Cup, Markram ended up as the fifth-highest run-getter with 309 runs in just seven innings and scored his maiden century in the league.
Then, while leading the Proteas at the World Cup, the opener made 286 runs at a staggering strike rate of 165.32 in eight innings. He did the role pretty well, along with Mitchell Marsh at the top of the order last season, and Markram will again be someone the Lucknow Super Giants will be relying upon to give them decent starts. Going with his current form, it won’t be a surprise if he becomes a contender for the orange cap in the coming edition.

Suryakumar Yadav (MI)
The man who led India to their third T20 World Cup triumph, Suryakumar Yadav, would like to continue his dream run in the T20 format. As a batter, he had his best IPL season in 2025, as he accumulated 717 runs at a stunning strike rate of 167.92, coupled with an incredible average of 65.18 in 16 innings.
What was the most striking feature of his performance in the 2025 season was that, in all of his 17 outings, the right-hander crossed the 25-run mark. He remained consistent throughout, and one of the reasons why he was a contender for the Orange Cap was that he batted in the middle-order.
Though his numbers post the IPL weren’t up to the mark (190 runs in 14 T20Is), Surya is back to his best in 2026 (484 runs in 14 innings at a SR of 161.33) thus far. Even in India’s historic T20 World Cup campaign at home, the right-hander played a couple of useful knocks and got starts in almost all the games.
Surya has pretty much accomplished most things in T20 cricket, winning IPL and T20 World Cup on multiple occasions, but the one landmark that has eluded him is being the owner of the Orange Cap in IPL. He came close in the last season and would like to go one step further in the 2026 edition of IPL.

Virat Kohli (RCB)
We probably can’t have a list of contenders for the Orange Cap without including the most prolific batter in IPL of all time, Virat Kohli. The veteran batter playing for RCB may have retired from the international T20 format in 2024, but he is still a force to reckon with.
In the 2025 season, in which RCB won the title for the first time, Kohli was the team’s leading run-getter, scoring 657 runs, and overall, he was only behind Suryakumar Yadav and leader Sai Sudharsan (759 runs). This despite the fact that he hadn’t played a single T20 match since the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup final, which he played.
The 657 runs he made in the 2025 season were the third season in succession in which he has made 600 runs or more. This shows he is still hungry for runs & success in this format, and 2026 could very well be another season where he will continue to dominate the IPL batting charts.
