IPL 2025, SRH vs PBKS, Highlights: Abhishek Sharma tsunami leaves Punjab clueless; Sunrisers win

IPL 2025, SRH vs PBKS, Highlights: Abhishek Sharma’s 141(55) leads SRH to epic 245-run chase vs PBKS; Hyderabad move up to 8th place.

Brief Scores: SRH 247/2 (Abhishek Sharma 141*, Travis Head 66, Arshdeep Singh 1/37) Beat PBKS 245/6 (Shreyas Iyer 82, Marcus Stoinis 34*) by eight wickets.

Opting to bat first, Punjab Kings (PBKS) posted 245/6 in the first innings, their second-highest total of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Captain Shreyas Iyer clubbed 82 runs in just 36 balls before Marcus Stoinis provided them the momentum with 34* runs in 11 deliveries.

The 171-run opening stand between Travis Head (66) and Abhishek Sharma (141) provided Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) the winning platform. They chased down the mammoth score with eight wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.

Highlights from SRH vs PBKS game, IPL 2025

Shreyas Iyer is in a league of his own
Shreyas Iyer started the IPL 2025 with two successive unbeaten half-centuries before failing on two successive occasions. He walked into the middle with the side enjoying 66 runs on the board in just four overs. It was vital for the rest of the line-up to stretch the aggressive batting.

The right-handed batter smashed Harshal Patel over deep-midwicket for a six before swinging his willow against Eshan Malinga for the same result. Sunrisers went short at Iyer, who was pulling off the backfoot. He celebrated his fastest IPL fifty in just 22 balls.

The 2014 runners-up lost a few consecutive wickets in the middle overs, but that didn’t impact the Mumbai-born in changing his mindset. He drilled the Sri Lanka pacer for three boundaries to end with 82 runs in just 36 balls. Iyer’s knock, decorated with six sixes and six boundaries, has made the fourth leading run-getter of the season so far with 250 runs.

Harshal Patel’s 4-fer proved vital
Harshal Patel, despite going for 13 runs in his first five balls, drew the first blood with the wicket of Priyansh Arya. At 168/3 in 14 overs, Punjab Kings were looking good to get 280 runs on the board. But the Haryana pacer changed the pace of the balls to raise tough questions against the batters.

With a good length delivery, he dismissed Shashank Singh on two runs in three balls. Even a set batter, Shreyas Iyer, failed to get a single boundary off the bat in the 15th over. Suddenly, the run rate dropped quite a bit.

On the first ball of the 18th over, Harshal, with a low full-toss, sent back Glenn Maxwell for three runs in seven balls. He caged Iyer, who smashed the short ball into the hands of the backward point. Using the slower ball and wide deliveries, the 34-year-old leaked just five runs on the 18th over to end with figures of 4/42 in four overs.

Abhishek Sharma lead the chase
Sunrisers Hyderabad struggled to get a firing opening partnership in the last few games of the IPL 2025. But they decided to show their power against Punjab during the 246-ryn chase.

Travis Head drilled two boundaries in the very first over. But the entire evening was around Abhishek Sharma, who cracked four boundaries against Marco Jansen in the second over. A no-ball saved him early in the innings before a few dropped catches made life easy for the southpaw.

They smashed 83/0 in the powerplay and kept on continuing the aggressive batting. The Punjab-born nailed Jansen for 20 overs, including two fours and two sixes. Yuzvendra Chahal tried to fox Sharma with the flighted balls, but nothing worked against the opener.

He celebrated his century in just 40 balls, making it the third fastest as an Indian, after Yusuf Pathan (37) and Priyansh Arya (39). Abhishek (141) registered the highest individual score ever by an Indian in the IPL. He has eclipsed KL Rahul’s 132* score for KXIP against RCB in IPL 2020.

Way forward
Despite the victory, the Sunrisers Hyderabad have a mountain to climb in the second half of the IPL 2025. They are currently at the eighth position with a net run rate of -1.63. Their next clash will be against the Mumbai Indians on April 18 at the Wankhede Stadium.

The Punjab Kings have so much to think about the bowling plans. Lockie Ferguson’s calf strain may keep him out of the event at least for a few weeks. Marco Jansen leaked 0/39 in his two overs. They need to think a lot about their bowling plan. The defeat has put them down to the sixth position with a net run rate of +0.289.

Punjab will lock horns with the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur for the next encounter.
