Gujarat Titans produced a brilliant all-round display to beat Mumbai Indians by 36 runs at Ahmedabad in IPL 2025 on Saturday. After setting up a target of 197, Gujarat restricted Mumbai for 160/6 to win the match by 36 runs. This was Gujarat’s first win in the tournament, while Mumbai posted second straight loss.

Hits from GT vs MI game

Sai Sudharsan’s rich form
Sudharsan struck his second straight fifty when he smashed 41-ball 63 against Mumbai Indians after his 74 against Punjab Kings in the first match. Sudharsan anchored the innings brilliantly against Mumbai, ensuring a top-order batter was always at the crease while others batted around him. However, Sudharsan also took his chances and flexed his arms whenever needed to struck some big blows. He didn’t spare any bowler, hitting a four and a six off the first two balls bowled by Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Even Trent Boult was not spared either as Sudharsan cracked two superbly driven fours off the bowler. Sudharsan’s good form augurs well for Gujarat as they need a top-order batter to guide a inconsistent lower order.

Hardik Pandya’s bowling in middle-overs
It was Hardik’s first match in IPL 2025, and he led from the front with the ball. Mumbai were missing the experience of Jasprit Bumrah but Pandya ensured he made up for it by bowling tidy overs in the middle-overs, and bagged two wickets in the process. He first took the wicket of Gujarat opener Shubman Gill to break a threatening opening stand. Later, he dismissed the dangerous M Shahrukh Khan to stall Gujarat’s progress in the death overs. Pandya bowled all his four overs conceding just 29 runs for 2 wickets. It bodes well for Mumbai who need their star all-rounder to fire consistently to keep the team in hunt.

Gujarat’s effective bowling
Gujarat bowlers produced brilliant bowling display, especially the pacers who didn’t give anything away to Mumbai batters to free their arms and score those boundaries. It was Mohammed Siraj who started the onslaught, bowling a perfect inswinger to dismiss Rohit Sharma bowled. Ishant Sharma also bowled good two overs. But it was Prasidh Krishna who stole the show, giving away just 18 runs for his two wickets. Krishna bowled hard length that was too good to get away with. It was neither too short to be pull nor too full to be driven on front foot. His change of pace was also the key as SKY fell to a slower ball. The pace bowlers ensured the ball was heavy on one side, with Siraj taking care of the shine, to get reverse swing. The pace bowlers worked in tandem to win a crucial match and earn two points.

Flops from GT vs MI game

Gujarat lower-order’s failure
Gujarat have a top-heavy batting unit where the top three of Gill, Sudharsan and Jos Buttler are consistently making the runs, but the batters following them have not been contributing enough. Sherfane Rutherford has done his bit with the bat at No 4 and No 5 in the two games. But Gujarat need more contribution from the lower-order batters such as M Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan to finish off a chase or end an innings with bang. This lack of contribution from the lower-order batters cost Gujarat the match against PBKS. Also, it also contributed to Gujarat failing to go beyond 220-plus against Mumbai as all they could manage was 45 runs for 5 wickets from overs 16-20.

What’s the way forward
Mumbai again had a bad start to the tournament, losing two straight matches. They must regroup quickly and bring back their A game in the next clash against KKR on March 31. Gujarat have opened their account, and would look to carry forward the winning momentum in the next game against RCB on April 2.
