Brief Scores: IND 518/5 dec (Yashasvi Jaiswal 175, Shubman Gill 129*, Jomel Warrican 3/98) & 63/1 (Sai Sudharsan 30*, Jomel Warrican 1/15) need 58 runs vs WI 248 (Alick Athanaze 41, Shai Hope 36, Kuldeep Yadav 5/82) & 390 (f/o) (John Campbell 115, Shai Hope 103, Jasprit Bumrah 3/44, Kuldeep Yadav 3/104) on Day 4 at Stumps.

When India enforced the follow-on with a 270-run lead, they hardly imagined toiling in the third session of the third day. But Shai Hope and John Campbell’s unbeaten 138-run stand put the West Indies in a decent position. On the fourth day of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the home bowlers needed to come up with different plans to challenge the batters’ comfort.

Foot holes started to spread on the surface, with bounce getting lower as the game progressed. On one end, the spinner could use the wear and tear with the pacers operating from the other. Due to the lack of bounce, it was important for the bowlers to push the batters to play more horizontal shots.

Talking points: India’s follow-on decision haunts them
India hardly imagined that their decision to enforce follow-on would trouble them. Going forward, they would also need to think of putting a batting surface. Their bowlers struggled to break partnerships on this type of track. Meanwhile, the entire West Indies batting line-up showed application and determination in the second innings.

John Campbell’s 115 pushes West Indies to 252/3; trail by 18 runs
Jasprit Bumrah made life hard for Campbell with reverse swing in the first 30 minutes. He had almost dismissed the batter before technology saved him. Getting frustrated with the situation, the southpaw swept Ravindra Jadeja with the spin for a six over wide long-on. The six helped him reach his maiden Test century.

But Jadeja finally broke the 177-run stand with the wicket of Campbell on 115 runs. The left-handed batter, looking to play the reverse sweep, missed the straight ball and was adjudged leg before the stumps. Roston Chase showed intent for his unbeaten 23 runs. Hope got into the 90s as West Indies cut the deficit to 18 runs by the end of the session.

Courageous West Indies stretch lead to 91 runs amidst Kuldeep Yadav’s three wickets
Hope started the session, celebrating his third Test century. He got an outside edge to Mohammed Siraj as the ball died through the slip region for a boundary. But he couldn’t last long in the middle. The Hyderabad-born pushed him on the back foot with a short ball as Hope got an inside edge onto the stumps on 103. However, Chase continued to smash the big shots.

But Kuldeep Yadav’s new spell brought the curtains down for the visitors. He trapped Tevin Imlach before the stumps before earning two wickets in three balls. Bumrah broke the defense of Jomel Warrican before finding the edge of Anderson Philip.

However, the unbeaten, gritty 50-run stand for the last wicket frustrated the home side. They stretched the lead to 91 runs as the players took tea after an extended session.

India lose Yashasvi Jaiswal in 121-run chase to end with 63/1
Justin Greaves completed a fine half-century to shoulder the lead over 100 runs. Bumrah came back into the attack to break the 79-run stand with the wicket of Jayden Seales. The left-handed batter, on 32, chipped the ball into the hands of deep square leg and hence, India needed 121 runs to seal the series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal cleared his intention with a boundary on the third ball. But he mistimed the big shot into the hands of the long-on fielder. Since his wicket, Sai Sudharsan and KL Rahul didn’t take any risk and only kept rotating the strike.

The umpires decided to call the day off due to bad light. The home side would need 58 runs on the fifth and final day.

What to expect on Day 5
It will be a very simple equation for both sides. India will need 58 runs for victory. For the West Indies, it will be tough to get nine wickets in such a small time, but if they can pick a couple of wickets early, then it can at least unsettle the home dressing room.
