India’s 2025-26 ODI series against South Africa will be a chance for redemption after a humiliating 0-2 Test defeat. Moreover, the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli adds a layer of emotion and expectation.

Historically, South Africa have held the edge over India in ODIs, even as the gap has narrowed in the last decade. Across 94 ODIs so far, South Africa have won 51, India 40, with three no-results and no ties.

South Africa have also dominated several high-scoring encounters, including the 438/4 at the Wankhede, while India’s 401/3 at Gwalior headlines their best days. Coming into this series, head-to-head numbers and the recent Test battering will both add pressure on India to respond strongly in their preferred white-ball format.

India’s top three vs Marco Jansen
India’s likely top three of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli will have to set the tone against a tall, left-arm enforcer in Marco Jansen. Jansen’s steep bounce, early swing and improved accuracy make him South Africa’s primary new-ball threat.

Rohit vs Jansen (ODIs): Rohit Sharma has scored 10 runs off 6 balls from Jansen in ODIs, with no dismissals, striking at 166.7, hitting two fours. The sample size is small, but India batters have had a tough time against left-arm pacers.

Virat vs Jansen (ODIs): Virat Kohli has 16 runs off 11 balls, again without being dismissed, at a strike rate of 145.5, with two boundaries and only two dot balls in that phase.

For Jaiswal, this would only be the second ODI for the young gun in international senior men’s cricket. But, Jansen has given him a tough time in the recently concluded Test series.

If Jansen can nip out one of Rohit or Jaiswal early, he exposes Kohli to a harder ball and the chance for South Africa to attack with slips and an aggressive ring field. Conversely, if India’s top three blunt him, the momentum can shift quickly.

Aiden Markram vs Ravindra Jadeja
At No 3 or 4, Aiden Markram is South Africa’s tempo-setter, and his contest with Ravindra Jadeja in the middle overs could shape totals. In ODIs, Markram has rarely faced Jadeja: 1 run off 1 ball, no dismissal. This will effectively be a fresh battle in 50-over cricket.

The more telling context comes from Tests, where Markram has scored 19 off 39 balls against Jadeja with one dismissal, strike rate of 48.7, suggesting he has had to work hard for runs against the left-arm spinner’s accuracy and subtle turn.

In ODIs on Indian pitches, Jadeja’s wicket-to-wicket length, skiddy pace and ability to vary angles around the wicket can cramp Markram’s favoured drives and lofts over extra cover.

If Markram dominates Jadeja, using his feet to get to the pitch and sweeping to disturb lines, South Africa can control the middle overs and set up the finishers to launch at the death.

Virat Kohli vs Keshav Maharaj
Few battles will be as tactical as Virat Kohli against Keshav Maharaj, South Africa’s premier ODI spinner and control bowler. Kohli has scored 52 runs off 89 balls from Maharaj in ODIs, been dismissed twice, with a strike rate of 58.4 – numbers that highlight how effectively Maharaj has restricted him.

Maharaj’s strength lies in his ability to bowl a tight line just outside off, varying pace subtly, and forcing batters to push rather than drive or sweep freely. Kohli, whose game thrives on finding gaps and rotating strike, has often had to bide his time, taking singles and risking frustration against long spells of dots.

Quinton de Kock vs Arshdeep Singh
At the top of South Africa’s order, Quinton de Kock remains their most dangerous ODI batter, and his battle with left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh could decide early momentum.

Quinton looks to free his arms square of the wicket, while Arshdeep hunts lbw and bowls with late inswing and the odd wobble-seam away. If Arshdeep wins, nipping de Kock out early, especially with the ball tailing in from over the wicket, India immediately strangles South Africa’s scoring options. But if de Kock settles, his ability to hit Arshdeep off his length with drives and pulls can dent India’s new-ball plans and put pressure back on the bowling attack.

Team strengths
India’s primary strength lies in their top three. Rohit, Jaiswal and Kohli give them a blend of experience, flair and chase-master pedigree. With Jadeja and potentially Sundar, India bat deep and possess multiple spin options, complemented by Arshdeep and other quicks for new-ball and death overs.

South Africa, meanwhile, bring a powerful batting engine with de Kock, Bavuma, and Markram, all capable of clearing boundaries and batting long. Their bowling combines Jansen’s left-arm pace, Ngidi’s hit-the-deck hostility and Maharaj’s control, giving them tools for both early strikes and middle-overs choke.

After the Test debacle, this ODI series will decide whether India walk away from this tour with renewed confidence or deeper questions.
