Brief Scores: England 387 (Joe Root 104, Jasprit Bumrah 5/74) & 192 (Joe Root 40, Washington Sundar 4/22) beat India 387 (KL Rahul 100, Rishabh Pant 74, Chris Woakes 3/84) & 170 (Ravindra Jadeja 61*, Ben Stokes 3/48) by 22 runs.

After four days of exciting cricket with multiple verbal spats between the two sides, England and India, it all came down to the fifth day of the third Test at Lord’s. The tourists started the day with 58/4, still needing 135 runs to go 2-1 up in the series. The Ben Stokes’ army could smell the win, having already sent the visiting inform captain, Shubman Gill, back in the hut late on day four.

The surface, with more heat, had started the break. There were a few patches where a few balls were flying to shoulder height, while a few other balls were going down to the knee. The new ball had moved into the air, and that would be where the home side thinks of targeting.

Let’s take a look at how the three sessions panned out on Day 5 of the third ENG vs IND 2025 series at Lord’s:

England’s four wickets give India a body blow; visitors need 81 runs to win
The morning session did not start on a positive note for the Blue Brigade. Rishabh Pant used his feet to smack Jofra Archer down the ground for a boundary. But that was the only reason to smile and cheer for the touring fans. With a cracking delivery, the Barbados-born broke the stumps of the Indian wicket-keeper batter.

Stokes, on July 14, was always going to be a game-changing man for the Three Lions. He trapped KL Rahul on the pads. The right-handed batter kept the bat behind the pads, and that brought the downfall.  Additionally, Archer picked up Washington Sundar’s wicket with a brilliant leaping catch off his bowling. The Southpaw, looking to guide the ball on the leg side, got a leading edge back to the bowler. All of these happened in the first 40 minutes.

Nitish Reddy and Ravindra Jadeja started to grind the bowlers with singles and doubles. They put up a 30-run stand for the eighth wicket before the right-handed batter got an outside edge on the stroke of lunch. The visitors went back to the dressing room with 112/8, still needing 81 runs for victory.

Jadeja’s 56* kept India in the chase; India need 30 runs to win
Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah started the second session well. The former kept giving singles to the bowler on the last balls or the penultimate balls of an over. The Saurashtra all-rounder used his T20 skills to smash Stokes into the stands for a six. Suddenly, the pressure shifted to the home side as they brought Joe Root and later Shoaib Bashir into the attack.

Bumrah survived long enough before finally giving up his wicket as a normal number 10. He couldn’t handle the short ball from Stokes and found the field just around the bowling mark. The hopes of India were nearly at an end. Jadeja kept pushing till the end as he celebrated his fourth successive half-century with a lucky edge over the slips. Quite surprisingly, they went to the Tea break needing 30 more runs to win.

Siraj’s dramatic dismissal gives England 22-run victory; go 2-1 up in the series
Jadeja kept fighting as was Siraj but it was the most dramatic end of the clash. The Hyderabad-born defended the ball but it popped up in the air and rolled on to the stumps as the bails got off the groove. Siraj was down on his haunches just like Brett Lee was at Edgbaston 20 years ago.

India fell short of the chase by 22 runs as England took 2-1 series lead.

What’s next
England will enjoy the victory to go 2-1 up in the series. After a couple of hard-fought emotional fixtures, it will be another week’s break for the players to freshen up. Questions will be there on Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the next fixture. The fourth Test of the series will take place on July 23 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
