ENG vs IND, 2025, Lord’s Test, Day 4, Highlights: KL Rahul fights on as India reels at 58/4 in 193-run chase.

Brief Scores: India 387 & 58/4 (KL Rahul 33*, Brydon Carse 2/11, Ben Stokes 1/15) need 135 runs to beat England 387 & 192 (Joe Root 40, Ben Stokes 33, Washington Sundar 4/22)
On a tipsy turvy day, England put themselves marginally ahead by claiming four quick wickets towards the end of the day in their defence of 193. Earlier in the day, Washington Sundar’s four-fer and early surge by Mohammed Siraj kept the hosts second innings down to 192.
India pacers start with a fiery spell, England end first session at 92/4
The play resumed with the same intensity that was on display towards the end of Day 3. India pacers, particularly Mohammed Siraj was in his element throughout his first spell. They managed to go past the edge of bat several times and this resulted in the dismissal of Ben Duckett who mistimed a pull off Siraj.
Mohammed Siraj struck early in the session, trapping Ollie Pope plumb in front with a sharp in-swinger. Pope, who never looked settled at the crease, departed without making any significant contribution, extending his lean patch in this series. Following that, it was Nitish Kumar Reddy who once again delivered a key breakthrough—just as he had in the first innings. He dismissed Zak Crawley, who appeared to be struggling to find rhythm. Reddy bowled a probing spell, and Crawley, under pressure, edged one tamely to the slips, continuing his inconsistent run.
England then found some stability as Harry Brook joined Joe Root in the middle. The pair stitched together a promising partnership, mixing caution with aggression as they tried to rebuild the innings. Root played with his trademark composure, while Brook looked fluent during his stay. However, their resistance was short-lived. Akash Deep produced a moment of brilliance to clean up Joe Root with a delivery that jagged back sharply, breaching his defence. Soon after, Washington Sundar accounted for Harry Brook, who was bowled trying to play a risky sweep shot.
Although England managed to add 96 runs in the session, the bigger concern for the hosts was the loss of four crucial top-order wickets. With the middle order now exposed and India’s bowlers maintaining relentless pressure, the advantage clearly tilted in favour of the visitors.

Joe Root and Ben Stokes steady England, before Sundar struck
India were once again spot on with their line & lengths and went past the English batters outside edge on multiple occasions without much luck. The experienced pair of Root and Stokes went unscathed through the first half of the post-lunch session and most importantly added 42 runs in the time frame. Just as it looked like the hosts would dominate proceedings and pile on runs in the session, out of the blue, India got the breakthrough in the form of Washington Sundar who rattled Root’s timber.
The off spinner & Jadeja kept things tight, and it got them another wicket. Sundar struck once again, and this time it was the in-form Jamie Smith. Suddenly, an England collapse loomed large as they went into tea session at 175/6, with Ben Stokes still at crease batting on 27.
India wipe out England tail quickly
In stark contrast to the first innings, where India had let the final three English wickets pile on over 100 runs, the bowlers displayed far greater discipline and control in England’s second essay. This time, they did not allow the lower order, particularly Ben Stokes and Brydon Carse, the freedom to play their natural, aggressive brand of cricket.
The session began with a crucial breakthrough as Ben Stokes, looking to counterattack, fell while attempting to take on off-spinner Washington Sundar. Stokes misjudged the turn and ended up offering a simple catch, departing at a critical juncture. Jasprit Bumrah, the architect of India’s first-innings success, soon joined the action. Operating with trademark precision and pace, he struck twice in quick succession, dismissing both Mark Wood and Brydon Carse in the span of two overs, to put England firmly on the back foot.
Washington Sundar then returned to polish off the tail, claiming his fourth wicket of the innings to wrap up a fine spell. England were eventually bowled out, setting India a target of 193, a total that reflected India’s improved execution and intent with the ball in the final innings.

England strike back with quick wickets late in the day
Chasing a tricky target on a surface that has uneven bounce, India had a torrid start with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal gifting his wicket away to a harmless short delivery off Jofra Archer. KL Rahul and Karun Nair played some strokes to wipe off some runs from the target, but a brain fade cost Nair his wicket.
Karun Nair left an incoming delivery to his pads off Carse, trapping him leg-before and skipper Gill followed suit. A wicket in the final over of the day left India reeling at 58/4, needing further 135 runs to get over the line.
What to expect on Day 5
An exciting finish to a memorable Test on the cards with India needing 135 runs and England six wickets to go 2-1 up in the series.
It will be interesting to see what approach India will take to make these remaining runs and what tricks the pitch will do on the final day.

Wears his heart on his sleeve and gives absolutely everything he has to every delivery he bowls.
A captains dream!
Fantastic bowling performance by India. Tough pitch to bat on, but with quite a few batsmen getting a start, England would have wanted 50-60 runs more than what they got.

Top drawer bowling from India. The quicks were fantastic in the morning session and Washington Sundar has bowled with great control. I am delighted for him. He is a serious cricketer.
