ENG vs IND 2025, 1st Test Day 3: Team India 96 runs ahead with 8 wickets in hand, game perfectly poised at Headingley.

Brief scores: India: 471 (Shubhman Gill 147, Rishabh Pant 134, Ben Stokes 4/66, Josh Tongue 4/86) & 90/2 (KL Rahul 47*, Ben Stokes 1/18) lead England: 465 (Ollie Pope 106, Harry Brook 99, Jasprit Bumrah 5/83) by 96 runs at stumps on Day 3.
Day 3 at Headingley saw England’s batters in fine form, accumulating a significant number of runs to narrow down the chase. Harry Brook was just shy of a century, while Jasprit Bumrah added another five wicket haul to his tally.
Harry Brook’s compact 57 take England to 327/5 at lunch
The first session of Day 3 was shared as England scored 118 runs, throwing away two crucial wickets. Harry Brook was in the driving seat as he counter-attacked pretty well. The only time he was seen off beat was when Rishabh Pant dropped his catch on 46. Other than that, he was right on the money, testing the temperament of India’s bowling lineup.
Team India, on the other hand, managed to take two crucial wickets, one of a centurion and the other of the skipper. The first one came when Prasidh Krishna’s ripper kissed Ollie Pope’s edge and the second one came when Mohammad Siraj’s fiery ball dismissed the England captain- Ben Stokes.

Jasprit Bumrah shines again
England’s lower order was becoming a headache, with no India bowler other than Jasprit Bumrah looking promising. While others were erratic, particularly Siraj, it was Bumrah who showed character by clinching another five wicket haul. Apart from that, it was India’s fielding that disappointed. Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped a dolly, giving away third lifeline to set batter Harry Brook at 83.
Two early wickets put India in tough spot
England dominated the last session of Day 3 as they managed to dismantle the top order by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. Their captain, Ben Stokes, placed the field to perfection, trapping the latter with a peach of a delivery.
KL Rahul, on the other hand, looked very impressive as he scored some classical cover drives. He is now unbeaten at 47 along with Shubhman Gill at the crease.

What to expect on next day
India will look to build long partnerships as they need a decent score to defend in the fourth innings. A lot of responsibility now lies on the skipper and his deputy, as they need to stay in the middle for as long as possible. Wicket will continue to behave the same way, supporting batsmen. Hence, another display of Bazball is expected on Day 4.

Game wide open. India need 350+ from here to make it a game. And to give the unbelievable Bumrah some time to rest before he bowls again.

Bumrah hets the first 3 wickets and the last 2 to earn India token lead. The rest of fhe bowling was terribly disappointing. Team without Jassie gives me the shivers!

It does lookslike England is fighting but India is ahead in this game. England has to bat last, pitch has some grip in it. Jaddu will be a factor in the last inning.
