In the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips is the third leading run-getter against spinners. He has collected 140 runs in just five innings at an average of 46.67 and a strike rate of 164.71, thanks to 11 boundaries and eight sixes. Quite surprisingly, there is no India batter in the top five. Meanwhile, only Ishan Kishan sits as the only batter of the Blue Brigadeamong the top 15 on the list.

This isn’t great news for the home side. Since the beginning of 2026, they have an average of 26.33 in the shortest format against the spinners. The India batters have collected 948 T20I runs in 13 innings for the loss of 36 wickets against this type of bowler. Against New Zealand in the final, the battle will be to earn success against the spinners.

India batters need better application vs spinners in T20 WC 2026 final
India have struggled the most against the off-spinners with a poor average of just 13.27 in seven innings, losing 15 wickets. This is the lowest average among all the Super 8-qualified sides. The defending champions have carried a below-par strike rate of 117.75, smashing only 17 boundaries and nine sixes.

Abhishek Sharma has been dismissed twice against the off-spinners for only 23 runs in 16 balls. Meanwhile, Kishan has an average of 9.50 against this type of bowling for 38 runs in six innings, besides being dismissed four times. Their captain, Suryakumar, has a shocking strike rate of 106.25 against the right-arm spinners with 34 runs in 32 balls.

Shivam Dube, who has gained fame as a power-hitter against the spinners, hasn’t been able to crack the off-spinners. The southpaw has a strike rate of only 128.57 in the qualification, while Hardik has an average of 6.67 with 20 runs in three innings.

“We haven’t discussed the off-spin threat at all. On a given day, if any batter does well against a particular bowler, then it’s important to do that and do what the team requires. If in the final, they bring on two spinners, then we have to face them, and I’m sure we’ll handle it.” India’s captain spoke in the pre-match press conference on the eve of the final.

Santner may think of rolling his arms against Sanju Samson inside the powerplay. The wicket-keeper batter has managed a single in seven balls against the left-arm spinner besides two dismissals in T20s at an average of 0.50.

India’s batters, as their captain felt, will need to be courageous against the spinners from the beginning. They will have to show better application in the face-off to put pressure on them. Most spinners’ lines and length crumble under pressure, and the Kiwis have a young spinner, Cole McConchie.

From the beginning of this T20 WC 2026, spin was always going to play a key role for the home side, whether in batting or bowling. In the final on March 08 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, they need to come with all guns blazing. The pressure, undoubtedly, will be on them. But as their captain says, when there is no pressure, there is no fun.
