India to start T20 World Cup defense against USA at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai
Team India will begin their campaign against United States of America (USA) on February 7 at the Wankhede Stadium. All the teams of Group B, including the co-hosts, will play their group games in Colombo and Kandy. India and Netherlands are the only teams with group matches at four venues, including one in Colombo.

Jay Shah, the ICC chairman, reflected on how the passion for cricket in this region would remain unmatched. He also expects a massive crowd in all five venues in India and three in Sri Lanka throughout the tournament.
“The T20 format continues to drive the sport’s global expansion and will be showcased at the LA Olympics in 2028. With that in mind, the 2026 edition will capture the imagination of millions. One can already picture the electric atmosphere at the Narendra Modi Stadium when the champions lift the trophy on 8 March.” Shah said in a statement.
Rohit Sharma, the T20 World Cup 2024 winning captain and recently appointed as ICC Brand Ambassador, hopes to see the event flourish in India.
“I have the good fortune of winning this tournament two times and can say from experience that each win in this tournament is a special one. I won the title in 2007 as a youngster and then lifted it as captain in 2024, but it is not just the final that I remember with as much fondness.” India’s former captain expressed.
In 2024, New York hosted six games in five days, and the tired pitches became an issue. This time around, the ICC has decided to take a new route. There are no multiple games at a venue within a short span of time. One exception, though, is the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai that will host four games in a week.
