It wasn’t an easy week for the Indian side at Lord’s, having faced a 22-run dramatic defeat during the third Test of the five-match series against England. Despite their hard work throughout the five days with both bat and ball in hand, the tourists are behind by a 2-1 margin.

Most of the visiting bowlers enjoyed their time during the contest. However, the batters, who had earned so much success in the series so far, went through a tough time during the fixture.

Let’s take a look at how the Indian players performed in the ICC Men’s Test rankings:

Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal fall in the Test rankings
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal drops one place to the fifth position with 801 rating points. The Southpaw had a challenging time against Jofra Archer. In the first innings, he was squared up to get an outside edge into the hands of the slip fielder for 13 runs. In the second innings, he was hurried by Archer’s pace as the miscued pull shot did not go his way for the seven-ball duck.

Captain Shubman Gill had a disappointing outing at Lord’s and dropped from sixth rank to ninth. Across the two innings, the right-handed batter clubbed only 22 runs. Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, dropped a place to number eight despite his first-innings score of 74.

KL Rahul had a terrific game with the bat. In the first innings, he celebrated his tenth red-ball century before adding 39 more runs to the tally during the second innings. As a result, he moved up five spots to 35. Ravindra Jadeja is just above the Karnataka batter at 34. The Southpaw recorded half-centuries in both innings, including a stubborn unbeaten 61 runs in their chase of 193.

With the ball, Ravindra Jadeja picked up the only wicket of Ollie Pope in this fixture. He remains the number one-ranked Test all-rounder with 409 ratings. Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz is in the second position with 305 points. Washington Sundar, who picked up 4/22 during India’s second innings with the ball, moves up two places to 21 in the all-rounder’s category.

The tourist’s issue with their number three continues. Karun Nair, who scored 40 and 14 at Lord’s, is not among the top 100-ranked batters in the ICC Test ranking.

Last week, Harry Brook snatched the top rank among Men’s Test batter rankings from Joe Root with a fine century. But the former England captain has returned to his top spot, thanks to a 104-run knock in the first innings at Lord’s. Brook, on the other hand, has dropped down to three with twin failures.

ENG vs IND, 2025: Epic 269-run innings at Edgbaston lifts Shubman Gill’s career Test average above 40. What's fuming Gill's success at No. 4?

Jasprit Bumrah retains top spot in the Test bowling ranking
India’s premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, continues to enjoy his time at the top of the bowling charts. In the first innings, he picked up a five-wicket haul to deny the home side a score over the 400-run mark. He now has a lead of 50 ratings from South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, who is in the second position.

With Shamar Joseph flying up to the 14th spot, Jadeja has dropped down to 15. Mohammed Siraj holds his place at 22 after he bagged four wickets at Lord’s.

It could be a slight concern for the Blue Brigade that, apart from Bumrah, they don’t have any other bowlers in the top ten. Meanwhile, Australia have all of their five bowlers, Mitchell Starc (10), Nathan Lyon (08), Josh Hazlewood (04), Pat Cummins (03), and Scott Boland (06) showing their dominance. After the Ahmedabad-born, the next best pacer for India is Siraj at 22.

As of now, Bumrah is the second-leading wicket-taker of the series against England. He has pocketed 12 wickets in four innings at an average of 21 and a strike rate of 43.33.

For Gill’s army, the challenge is huge ahead of the fourth fixture. It will be a do-or-die contest at Old Trafford in Manchester for them. It’s a venue where they haven’t won a single red-ball encounter so far in nine attempts. If they face another defeat, it will be the end of the series for them.
