ENG vs IND, 2025, Lord’s Test, Day 2 Highlights: Jasprit Bumrah’s fifer restricts hosts to 387; Visitors 145/3 at stumps

Brief Scores: India 145/3 (KL Rahul 53*, Ben Stokes 1/16) trail England 387 (Joe Root 104, Brydon Carse 56, Jasprit Bumrah 5/74) by 242 runs at stumps on Day 2.
England took an old-school anti-Bazball approach during the opening day of the third Lord’s Test against India. Joe Root was on an unbeaten 99 as their aim was to score over 450 runs. On the other hand, India wanted to pick up a few crucial wickets, especially of the former England captain, to deny them the daunting first innings total.
The surface still looked good to bat, even though a few footmarks had settled in. The grass covering kept the 22-yard dry. And due to the dryness, the topsoil assisted the spinners a bit on the first day. The second new ball was expected to play a major role in the contest.
Let’s take a look at how the three sessions progressed on Day 2 of the third Eng vs Ind 2025 series at Lord’s:
Jamie Smith writes England’s fightback after Jasprit Bumrah’s burst; England 353/7 at lunch
Joe Root, on 99*, went for a booming drive on the very first ball of the day and got a lucky boundary. He celebrated his 37th red-ball century, but that was the only happy period for the home side in the first 30 minutes. Jasprit Bumrah, with a nip backer, broke through Ben Stokes’ defence, before Root got an inside edge onto the stumps.
On the very next delivery, Chris Woakes got an outside edge into the wicket-keepers’ gloves. But the ball change didn’t help the visitors. Shubman Gill, the captain, was not happy as the umpires threw them a relatively old delivery. The frustration channeled into India losing focus on the game.
Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse took full advantage of it and put up an unbeaten 82-run stand for the eighth wicket. The former celebrated another half-century in the series. England went to the break with 353/7.

England roll over for 387; Jasprit Bumrah picks a fifer
Mohammed Siraj gave them the vital wicket of Smith, who couldn’t handle the ball coming from the angle. Bumrah registered his name on the honors board with a five-wicket haul. England, at one point, looked strong to finish over 450 runs, but ended with 387.
India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal before Tea to reach 44/1
Yashasvi Jaiswal had a cracking start to the innings with three boundaries on the first four balls. Chris Woakes was off target, but that wasn’t the case with Jofra Archer playing his first red-ball fixture since 2021. He invited the drive from the opener, who poked it into the hands of the slip fielder.
However, KL Rahul and Karun Nair looked stable in the middle. The pressure was immense on the number three to deliver and hold his place on the side. India progressed to 44/1 at tea, still trailing by 343 runs.
KL Rahul’s 53* takes India to 145/3; trail by 242 runs at stumps
Nair and KL Rahul put up the fifty-run stand. But it didn’t last long. Against the run of play, he got an outside edge against Stokes as Root grabbed a fine catch. The umpires checked the replays multiple times before ruling it out.
England made a fantastic set-up for Gill. Archer offered him a few gentle balls before nearly bouncing him out. But then, the home side went for the second plan. Chris Woakes took a short run-up and targeted Gill’s middle stump. Smith, the wicket-keeper, walked onto the stumps to deny the batter using his feet, and eventually, they got the outside edge.
Rahul celebrated his half-century before he and injured Rishabh Pant saw off the last period. India ended the day with 145/3, with a deficit by 242 runs.

What to expect on Day 3
India’s plan is simply to cross England’s first innings score or get near to the mark. They will have to chase in the fourth innings, which will put pressure on the young side. Also, the cracks will start to open under the heat. The batters will have a huge job against the home team, who will aim for a 100+ run lead at least.

England's day, all things considered. India ended up conceding 60-70 more than they would have liked to and need to bat all day tomorrow to get ahead in this game. Tall order though.

Lord’s Test intriguingly poised. Bumrah’s brilliance, Rahul’s solidity, good contributions from Siraj and Nair put India nudge ahead. With plethora of all-rounders team bats deep. But no scope for laxity. Getting sizeable lead vital. Batting last will be challenging.
