Priyansh Arya the next best thing in Indian cricket?

IPL 2025: Priyansh Arya scored his maiden IPL century against CSK — what makes this young talent special?

There are underdog stories. And then there’s Priyansh Arya’s story, which includes his friends mocking him over the question: Whether any team will raise the paddle for him in the Indian Premier League 2025 auction.

When the auction came around and the Punjab Kings raised their paddle to spend Rs 3.80 crore on him, over twelve times his base price, his skill and future made a statement.

After all, this was the same Priyansh who had gone unsold just a year before. But life has a quirky way of rewarding the quietly determined. And on April 8, 2025, under the lights at Mullanpur, the punchline became the headline.

His century against CSK
103 runs off just 39 balls including seven fours and nine towering sixes. The fourth-fastest century in IPL history. All this, while Punjab Kings were teetering at the edge of a collapse, five wickets down against Chennai Super Kings in eight overs.

The 24-year-old Priyansh Arya took the steering wheel of PBKS himself and played a knock which shouted, “I’m here to stay.”

He took apart world-class spinners like Noor Ahmad and R Ashwin. And as one says, luck favours the brave. It happened in Priyansh’s case as well. He was lucky with the dropped catches, but a 103-run innings is not only built up on luck, but skill.

Who Is Priyansh Arya?
Priyansh Arya, born on January 18, 2001, in Delhi, also bowls right-arm off-break, along with being a left-handed batter. He’s not from a family of cricketers, his parents are school teachers. Education was sacred in the Arya household, but so was passion.

He began his cricketing journey at the age of seven under coach Sanjay Bharadwaj, the man behind the rise of Gautam Gambhir, Amit Mishra, Nitish Rana, and others.

“No Phones, No Nonsense”
Priyansh would get up, walk before sunrise and reach his ground. He was not allowed to see his phone until after dinner. That was Arya’s daily reality. His childhood routine include — 12 hours of training a day, starting at 6.30 am. and ending at 6 pm, with barely a break in between.

Coach Bharadwaj ran a no-frills, no-distractions camp. Food was cooked on a traditional chulha, and Arya would only use his phone for max an hour at night.

“There was no rest,” Bharadwaj recalled while speaking to The Times of India. “He could only use his phone for an hour a day. The rest was cricket, and only cricket.”

After Priyansh’s iconic hundred, he called his coach, half-expecting a pat on the back. All he asked was, “Sir, theek tha?”(Was it okay?)

Coach Bhardwaj replied, “Kya theek tha? You’ve done well in one match. Don’t get carried away.” He also inspired Priyansh with his words of wisdom, “Priyansh, agar tu sirf haath se khelega, tu mazdoor rahega. Agar tu haath aur dimaag se khelega, toh kaarigar banega. Aur jab tu haath, dimaag aur jigre se khelega, tab tu asli kalakaar banega.” (If you play only with your hands, you’ll be a labourer. If you use your hands and brain, you become a craftsman. But when you add heart to that mix — then you become an artist.)

Impressive hitting across tournaments
Arya’s arrival in the IPL wasn’t a fluke. His cricketing resume reads like a to-do list for future India stars. He dominated in the Delhi Premier League (DPL) with 608 runs in just 10 innings for South Delhi Superstarz, including a 120 off 50 and six sixes in an over.

He was Delhi’s leading run scorer with 222 runs at a strike rate of 166.91 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (2023-24).

In his debut season in IPL, the youngster scored 47 in his first game. Then followed it up with an 8, a duck, and… the mother of all comebacks — 103 against CSK. He also joined Virat Kohli in an elite club by hitting a six off the very first ball of an IPL match.

What stands out about Priyansh isn’t just the way he plays but when he plays his best. When others collapse, he steps up. When seasoned spinners bring their A-game, he brings something even more audacious.

Against CSK, he wasn’t the biggest name on the team sheet. But he played like a veteran in a teenager’s body.

Arya is young, hungry, grounded (thanks to his coach) – skill required to be a successful cricketer. However, his biggest challenge would be staying consistent. As every cricket fan knows, talent will take you to the front door, but temperament unlocks the room.
