Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored just 34 runs from 3 innings so far in IPL 2025; Reasons behind the slump

Yashasvi Jaiswal has managed just 34 runs in three innings in IPL 2025 so far. What is causing his struggle in T20 format?

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the destructive opener of Rajasthan Royals, have not set the stage on fire in IPL 2025 yet with his power-hitting. He has managed just 34 runs in three matches for Rajasthan in the current season. However, Rajasthan won’t be taking any hasty decision as Jaiswal has been their most consistent batter in the last few seasons. Here’s a look at his performances for Rajasthan in the last two IPL seasons.

IPL 20241643531.07155.911/1

Thanks to his consistency, Rajasthan retained Jaiswal for Rs 18 crore, expecting the southpaw will fire again in the ongoing season. But his bat has been silent so far. What could be the possible reasons for Jaiswal’s slow returns with the bat so far?

Limited white-ball matches
A look at Jaiswal’s career since IPL 2024 shows he has played just 6 T20Is, aggregating 221 runs at 44.20 with 1 fifty. He also played his first and only ODI during this phase, scoring 15 runs against England. He, however, played majorly in Test cricket during this phase, playing 9 matches, scoring one ton and 6 fifties – one of the bright spots for India in a dismal Test season. Besides, the emergence of T20 openers in Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson has kept him away from selection for the T20 squad during the England series early this year.

So, overall, he played just seven white-ball matches at the international level in the past year. Although he was part of the winning 2024 World T20 campaign, he didn’t get a single game. He was also part of the non-travelling reserves of the successful 2025 Champions Trophy title.

Hence, the lack of game time in white-ball cricket is showing up in his game in the ongoing IPL season. The rustiness in his T20 game is very much apparent. With T20 cricket evolving, a batter needs to be match-ready for the shortest format just like in Test cricket. But for Jaiswal, it has not been the case so far as he has been majorly used for the longer version of the game.

How it has hurt Jaiswal’s T20 game
Jaiswal’s performance for Rajasthan shows he has been too eager to get going and score those quick runs as the opener. Hence, he has been dismissed twice for single-digit scores in three games. His scores read 1, 29, and 4. A look at his mode of dismissals in the three games shows Jaiswal has holed out, looking to break free, as he has struggled with his timing. Playing those rash shots has made him a walking wicket for the opponents. This happens when a player does not have much game time to adjust to the dynamics of T20 cricket.  The good thing is that Rajasthan has not given up on Jaiswal yet, as they believe in giving their players a longer run. Hence, Jaiswal has a few matches to make amends and starts scoring runs for his team.

How Jaiswal can break free
Jaiswal is too good a T20 player to get dismissed so early in the innings. He has a penchant for playing big knocks and playing long innings, be it any format. Hence, Jaiswal needs to take inspiration from his top IPL knocks where he has decimated the opposition bowling attack with his big-hitting ability. At the moment, Jaiswal needs to give himself some time to get adjusted to the pace of the wicket before unleashing his big strokes. If needed, Jaiswal could drop anchor while others bat around him. Jaiswal could rotate the strike, punish those bad balls, and look to bat bigger and deeper. A few quality sessions on the net will also help in getting his timing back in place. He has good support staff in Kumar Sangakkara, who could inspire the southpaw to get out of this rut and resume his run-scoring spree.
