Brief Scores: NZ 173/1 (Finn Allen 100*, Kagiso Rabada 1/28) beat SA 169/8 (Marco Jansen 55*, Cole McCochie 2/9, Rachin Ravindra 2/29) by nine-wickets.

Player of the Match: Finn Allen (100* off 33 balls)

New Zealand qualified for the semifinal of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after spending a nervy evening watching Pakistan’s narrow victory over Sri Lanka in the Super 8s. On the other hand, South Africa, the runners-up from the previous season, showed dominance in their unbeaten campaign. Both sides met each other for the first semifinal at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The Blackcaps have never beaten the Proteas in the T20 World Cup history, including their seven-wicket defeat in the group-stage fixture. But they had the opportunity to write history. There were a couple of cracks down the off stump for the right-handed batters on both ends. The 62m and 66m square boundaries were also smaller in comparison to the 74-meter straight boundary.

New Zealand captain, Mitchell Santner, won the toss and decided to bowl first, keeping the dew factor in mind. James Neesham returned to their eleven in place of Ish Sodhi. Meanwhile, South Africa go back to their three frontline bowlers- KG Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Keshav Maharaj for the knockout fixture.

Talking point: New Zealand’s superb use of bowling changes
Santner was excellent with his bowling resources in the semifinal. Despite getting two wickets of the left-handed batters from off-spinner Cole McConchie, NZ didn’t bring him back into the attack. They also used the pace of Lockie Ferguson at a crucial stage against the new batters, who took time to adjust to the pace of the surface. That didn’t let the Protea batters run away with a big score.

Marco Jansen’s jaw-dropping fifty shoulders SA to 169-8
South Africa did not make a great start to their batting as they lost five wickets for only 77 runs on the board. New Zealand dropped several catches, but the Proteas failed to take full advantage of them. Dewald Brevis played a decent knock of 34 runs but failed to convert it to a big score.

However, in an evening when they needed him the most, Jansen stood out for his clinical batting performances. He remained unbeaten for only 55 runs in 30 balls with the help of two fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 183.33. It helped the Rainbow Nation to finish with 169/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Finn Allen’s 33-ball 100* carries NZ to their second T20 WC final after 2021
New Zealand did not waste a single second and started to go after the Proteas from the very first over. The successful opening pair of Tim Seifert and Finn Allen completed 50 runs in just 4.1 overs as they finished the powerplay with 84 for no loss. Allen nailed Corbin Bosch for 22 runs to end the powerplay as Markram’s army looked clueless in the middle.

With a boundary against Lungi Ngidi, Seifert celebrated his fifty in just 28 balls. Meanwhile, Allen joined the party with a 19-ball half-century as he lunched Keshav Maharaj over mid-wicket for a massive six. Rabada broke the 117-run opening stand. But that was too late as Allen completed a 33-ball unbeaten 100 to carry the Kiwis to their second T20 WC final with the nine-wicket victory.
