Coming in as favourites to lift the T20 World Cup 2026 title, defending champions India finished atop Group A in the league stage. They registered four wins from four matches, boasting an impressive net run rate (NRR) of +2.50 to seal their place in the Super Eights. Their most emphatic result so far was a commanding 93-run victory over Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

However, despite maintaining a perfect record, India are yet to deliver a truly complete batting performance in the tournament. In contrast to the fearless and aggressive approach they displayed in the bilateral series leading up to the ICC event, their batters have not quite lived up to expectations.

They had different heroes bailing them out of trouble in all four games. Captain Suryakumar Yadav dropped a masterclass 84* knock against-the-odds in the opening game against USA at the Wankhede Stadium. Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, and Shivam Dube’s firepower blew away three opponents- Namibia, Pakistan, and Netherlands, respectively.

Let’s examine the three opponents of India in the Super Eight stage.

South Africa enjoy venue familiarity
South Africa have won all three of their group-stage clashes in Ahmedabad. Against Afghanistan, they held their nerve in the second super-over and recorded an easy victory in the chase against New Zealand. At the same ground, they will be up against India in the first Super Eight encounter on February 22.

It could prove to be an unspoken advantage for the Proteas. However, they did lose the bilateral encounter at this venue to the Blue Brigade by 30 runs while chasing a daunting target of 232.

Captain Aiden Markram has scored 150 runs in three innings of T20 WC 2026 at a strike rate of 178.57 with two half-centuries at this venue. Meanwhile, Lungi Ngidi has bagged eight T20I wickets at an average of 11.38 and an economy rate of 7.58.

The Rainbow Nation will be eager to get themselves in the right shape against Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy. The former has collected 23 T20I wickets at an average of 18.87, while Chakravarthy recorded 22 wickets in just eight innings against this opposition.

It will be a rematch of the T20 World Cup 2024 final, with South Africa eager to avenge that heartbreak and settle scores with India in the Super Eight stage.

West Indies’ strong teamwork
Every time West Indies have done well in the T20Is, they have played as a team. This campaign has echoed the same sentiment. Their unbeaten run in the event saw them hold their nerve against a powerful England side at the Wankhede Stadium, along with three more wins.

West Indies’ captain, Shai Hope, has been their leading run-getter of the tournament with 155 runs at a strike rate of 134.78. Shimron Hetmyer has done pretty well at number three in the T20 WC 2026 with 134 runs at a strike rate of 159.52. Moreover, Sherfane Rutherford has scored 126 runs at a strike rate of 180, which strengthens their middle order.

The two-time champions have not done well against the leg spinners at an average of 19.03 in T20Is since 2025. They have lost 34 wickets against this type of bowling in 21 innings. Hence, Chakravarthy will have a role to play when they meet on March 1 in Kolkata.

Gudakesh Motie, who has an economy rate of 6.62 in Kolkata in the ongoing event, will be valuable for the West Indies. Lastly, Shamar Joseph has done really well at this venue with five wickets at an economy rate of seven in the T20 WC 2026.

Zimbabwe’s resurgence see them top group-stage
Zimbabwe were not expected to feature in the Super Eight stage of the competition in terms of ICC’s pre-seeding. However, their grit and fighting spirit propelled them to the top of a challenging group that included heavyweights such as co-hosts Sri Lanka and Australia.

Their opener, Brian Bennett, is yet to get dismissed in the group stage, with 175 runs in three innings with two fifties. Captain Sikandar Raza has bagged 75 runs at a strike rate of 182.92. However, similar to West Indies, Zimbabwe have also struggled against leg spinners in T20Is with an average of 16.08 since 2025, besides losing 25 wickets in 17 innings.

Blessing Muzarabani has pocketed nine wickets at an economy rate of 5.91 in this T20 WC 2026. Meanwhile, India have struggled against the right-arm pacers with an average of 22.70 in this World Cup, losing 10 wickets in three innings.

Zimbabwe have played only three T20Is in India; the Super Eight clash will be their first T20I fixture in India against Suryakumar’s army. That underlines how experience could be decisive. The two teams will be up against each other on February 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
