Too many youngsters have shown their skill and class in recent times in Indian cricket. In this fast-evolving circuit, the name Suryansh Shedge is beginning to echo louder with each passing day. For those who haven’t yet heard of this young talent, it's only a matter of time before they do.

The 21-year-old Mumbai all-rounder has already begun making a name for himself, both with his consistent performances in domestic cricket and his recent success in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024-25. But what's even more exciting for fans is the fact that Shedge is now set to join the big leagues in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having been picked by Punjab Kings for INR 30 lakh in the 2025 mega auction.

A cricketing prodigy from Mumbai

Shedge was born on January 29, 2003, in a city that's known for producing some of the most talented cricketers in the country. Growing up in Mumbai, he was surrounded by the rich cricketing culture of the city. But it wasn’t just the city’s cricketing legacy that shaped him. Shedge was always a gifted athlete, showing a remarkable aptitude for the game from a young age.

He first came into the limelight in 2016 at the tender age of 13. He achieved a historic feat in the Giles Shield—scoring the fastest triple century in the history of the tournament. This was a sign of a young player who was capable of turning heads with his aggressive batting style and impeccable technique.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25: The defining moment

While Shedge had been quietly making his mark in domestic cricket, it was during the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 final that the cricketing world took serious notice of him. In a thrilling match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Mumbai found themselves in a tense chase against Madhya Pradesh. With the game hanging in the balance, it was Shedge who stepped up and delivered a match-winning performance that will be remembered for years to come.

Coming in at a critical juncture in the chase, Shedge walked in to face a nervy situation. What followed was nothing short of explosive. He smashed an unbeaten 36 off just 15 balls at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 240. The knock, laced with three sixes and as many boundaries, guided Mumbai to a thrilling win and their second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title.

"I was told beforehand that this would be my role. I would be batting at 5 or 6. So coming into this tournament, I tweaked my practice sessions a bit. I was playing 6-ball sets, trying to score a certain amount of runs in those 6 balls. That kind of helps," Shedge explained in an interview after the final. His approach to the game—practising for the exact situations he would face on the field—reflected his maturity and understanding of the game, despite his young age.

Joining Punjab Kings

With his growing stature in domestic cricket, it wasn’t long before IPL franchises took note of Suryansh Shedge. The IPL 2025 mega auction held in Jeddah saw Punjab Kings snapping up the young all-rounder for his base price of INR 30 lakh. The franchise, known for nurturing young talent, will offer Shedge a unique platform to hone his skills further under the tutelage of seasoned cricketers and expert coaches.

The opportunity to play alongside established stars in the IPL is a big step for Shedge. While he has already showcased his flair for the game in domestic cricket, the IPL will offer him exposure to high-pressure situations, where the stakes are higher and the competition stiffer. This could very well be the platform that transforms him from a domestic star into a national sensation.

A true all-rounder

One of the most exciting aspects of Suryansh Shedge’s game is his versatility. He is a genuine all-rounder, capable of both explosive batting and useful medium-fast bowling. In the T20 format, where the game demands quick-fire performances, Shedge has already proven that he has the temperament and skill to deliver when it matters most.

In the domestic circuit, his numbers are already starting to impress. In 9 T20 matches, he has scored 131 runs at a blistering strike rate of 251.92. His ability to clear the boundary, combined with his knack for accelerating the innings, makes him a valuable asset to any T20 team. Not to mention his medium-fast bowling has seen him pick up 8 wickets in the same number of matches, with a best bowling performance of 2/11.

The future of Indian Cricket

At just 21 years of age, Suryansh Shedge’s cricketing journey has just begun. His performances in domestic cricket, particularly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final, have shown that he has the temperament and skill to thrive in high-pressure situations. With the IPL now within his grasp, the young all-rounder is poised to take his game to the next level.
