Sri Lanka achieved a historic series victory over India, winning 2-0 in a three-match ODI series held on their home ground. They put an end to a 27-year drought for a bilateral series win against their neighbouring rivals. In the final match of the series, Sri Lanka secured a convincing 110-run victory at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday.
Power pact performance by Wellalage
A significant portion of the credit for this triumph goes to the young all-rounder, Dunith Wellalage, who played a pivotal role in dismantling India’s batting lineup. Born on January 9, 2003, to Suranga and Harshini Wellalage, Dunith Nethmika Wellalage was influenced by his father, a former professional cricketer, which provided a nurturing environment for his growth as a sportsperson. He began his cricketing journey representing his school, St. Sebastian's, in both the Under-13 and Under-15 age groups. He later moved on to play for St. Joseph’s at the Under-15 and Under-19 levels.
From a young age, Wellalage exhibited exceptional maturity and skill. His talent was evident when he made his First-Class debut at just 16 years old, playing for the Lanka Cricket Club against the Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club in May 2019.
Wellalage's potential was further showcased during the 2022 U19 World Cup, where he captained Sri Lanka. His performance was outstanding, as he claimed 17 wickets and scored 264 runs, firmly establishing himself as one of the tournament's premier all-rounders. This stellar display earned him a call-up to the national team for the home series against Australia.
