2024 was a bit of a disaster year for Mumbai Indians (MI) that left fans wondering if they were experiencing a mid-life crisis. From captaincy confusion to injuries to performances so poor, they might as well have been playing blindfolded. MI ended up with a disappointing 4 wins out of 14 matches. The five-time IPL champions were unrecognisable and, frankly, embarrassing for a team with such a rich history. But if there’s one thing that Mumbai does well, it’s bounce back from adversity like a seasoned pro. And that's exactly what they plan to do in IPL 2025.

Despite the disastrous 2024 campaign, MI has shown remarkable faith in their established stars, keeping hold of the big names like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma.

MI Squad Composition for IPL 2025

Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton (WK), Will Jacks, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya (C), Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Naman Dhir, Karn Sharma, Robin Minz, Allah Ghazanfar, Ashwani Kumar, Reece Topley, Shrijith Krishnan, Raj Bawa, Satyanarayana Raju, Bevon Jacobs, Arjun Tendulkar, Lizaad Williams, Vignesh Puthur.

Batters and Wicket-keepers

Rohit Sharma — the face of MI and arguably one of the most successful captains in IPL history — will once again open the batting. Opening with Rohit will be Ryan Rickelton, the explosive South Africa wicketkeeper-batter. Rickelton's impressive recent performances mean MI has a dynamic opening pair, with Rickelton's fearless stroke play complementing Rohit’s more composed, anchor-like role.

The middle order is where MI’s strategy gets interesting. This is where the team is stacking their bets on depth and flexibility, with a mix of aggressive hitters and reliable batters who can build innings.

Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav will be the lynchpins of the middle order. Both are explosive, versatile players who can either anchor the innings or accelerate when needed. Suryakumar has established himself as one of the finest T20 batters in the world, capable of taking the game away from opponents in a matter of overs. Tilak, on the other hand, has grown into one of the most exciting young talents in the IPL, with a calm head and the ability to take on spin and pace alike.

All-rounders

Hardik Pandya, MI's captain, will once again be the team's premier all-rounder. In 2025, he’ll need to deliver both with bat and ball to steer MI back to the top. His aggression with the bat and ability to pick key wickets makes him invaluable. Meanwhile, Will Jacks will add some serious muscle to the middle order. A heavy hitter and someone capable of taking on any attack, Jacks will be a key player for MI in the slog overs.

Additionally, Kiwi all-rounder Mitchell Santner can bowl tight overs and offer crucial breakthroughs in the middle phase of the game, while also adding handy runs in the lower order. Santner is one of those players who doesn’t necessarily steal the spotlight but does his job quietly and effectively.

List of all-rounders: Hardik Pandya (C), Mitchell Santner, Naman Dhir, Karn Sharma, Raj Bawa, Arjun Tendulkar, Vignesh Puthur.

Bowlers

Unlike the more flamboyant teams that went all-in on high-profile signings, Mumbai played it cool in the 2025 IPL Auction. They focused on strategic acquisitions that would complement their existing squad rather than make headline-grabbing splashes. The biggest move was bringing back Trent Boult for a hefty 12.5 crore INR — a steal, considering his base price was just 2 crore INR.

MI’s bowling attack looks solid but with a few areas to watch out for. The pace department is where the big guns are found. Jasprit Bumrah, after making a spectacular return in 2024, will be the go-to bowler for MI. Known for his death-bowling skills; Bumrah’s ability to bowl yorkers at will and pick key wickets makes him a lethal force across all phases of the game. He will have strong support in the form of Trent Boult, who is back after a brief hiatus and will be looking to make an impact, alongside Deepak Chahar, who can also move the ball in the air, MI have a formidable new-ball attack.

In the spin department, MI will rely on Karn Sharma, who can keep things tight in the middle overs, and Mitchell Santner — who’s just as capable with the ball as he is with the bat. This could be MI's secret weapon, especially in the spin-friendly conditions that some IPL venues can offer. However, one area of concern is whether MI has enough depth in their spin bowling options, especially if the wickets aren’t helping much.

List of bowlers: Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Ashwani Kumar, Reece Topley, Satyanarayana Raju, Allah Ghazanfar, Lizaad Williams.

Can MI return to glory?

While Mumbai’s 2024 season was a dumpster fire, the 2025 squad looks well-balanced and equipped to challenge for the title once again. The reliance on proven match-winners and the addition of key players like Trent Boult will bolster their chances.

With a solid core of batters, all-rounders, and bowlers, MI look primed for a comeback. Whether they can turn their disastrous 2024 season around and restore their reputation as one of the most dominant IPL franchises of all time will depend on their big guns staying fit and firing. But this is Mumbai Indians we’re talking about — if there’s one team that knows how to turn things around, it’s them.
