Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are back at it, making waves as they prepare for yet another season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). If there’s one thing that defines CSK, it’s the sense of family, continuity, and the ever-present aura of stability that surrounds them. Just when the IPL scene looked like it might witness a major shake-up; here come CSK — bringing their core of familiar faces back, with a few new twists to spice things up.

The first thing to notice about CSK's approach to the 2025 IPL auction is that it’s a bit like an old-school rock band getting the band back together after a long hiatus. We’re talking a full decade of separation before Ravichandran Ashwin made his much-anticipated return to the CSK fold after spending 10 seasons elsewhere. Along with Ashwin, CSK also reunited Ravindra Jadeja with his old pals, which sounds more like a feel-good, sentimental reunion tour than a shrewd team-building move.

Batters and Wicket-keepers

CSK’s batting unit has an ideal combination of established stars and promising new comers, ready to tackle every challenge that comes their way. At the helm of the batting order is captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, whose calm and composed approach has made him one of the most reliable openers in the tournament. Gaikwad excels in anchoring the innings but also has the ability to accelerate when required, making him a perfect leader for CSK’s top order. His leadership qualities will be crucial in guiding the team through important phases of the game.

Alongside Gaikwad, Devon Conway provides a steadying presence at the other end. Conway is known for his ability to build innings, allowing his more aggressive teammates to play around him. His calm demeanour and ability to rotate strike make him an ideal foil to the attacking players in CSK's top order.

Rahul Tripathi is another player who brings versatility to the line-up. A dynamic batter capable of taking on the bowlers in the powerplay, Tripathi can bat in various positions, providing CSK with flexibility in their batting order.

Behind the stumps, MS Dhoni continues to be the cornerstone of CSK's setup. As both captain and wicket-keeper, Dhoni’s sharp glove-work and unmatched game awareness will play a critical role throughout the season. His leadership and experience in high-pressure situations make him irreplaceable. While Vansh Bedi is listed as the backup wicket-keeper, it’s unlikely that he will feature unless Dhoni is unavailable.

List of batters and wicket-keepers: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Rahul Tripathi, MS Dhoni, Shaik Rasheed, Vansh Bedi, Andre Siddharth.

All-Rounders

CSK’s all-rounders provide immense balance to the squad, offering depth in both batting and bowling departments. Ravindra Jadeja, one of the finest all-rounders in world cricket, remains the key figure in this regard. Jadeja’s ability to turn the game with both bat and ball is unmatched, and his performances in the middle overs will be critical in containing opposition teams while also finishing games with the bat.

Both Shivam Dube and Rachin Ravindra add further balance to the squad with their ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game. Dube not only offers power-hitting in the lower order but can also provide valuable breakthroughs with his medium-fast bowling. Ravindra, with his combination of aggressive batting and handy medium-fast bowling, adds to CSK’s tactical flexibility. Additionally, Sam Curran, the English all-rounder, strengthens the team further.

List of all-rounders: Rachin Ravindra, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Vijay Shankar, Sam Curran, Anshul Kamboj, Deepak Hooda, Jamie Overton, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Ramakrishna Ghosh.

Bowling Attack

CSK’s bowling attack is a potent mix of pace and spin, ensuring the team has multiple options to combat any situation. Matheesha Pathirana, the Sri Lanka pacer, is known for his express pace and pinpoint accuracy, especially in the death overs. His ability to bowl yorkers at crucial junctures will be vital for CSK’s success, particularly in the final overs of a match.

Alongside him, Khaleel Ahmed brings the much-needed variation with his left-arm pace. Khaleel’s swing in the early overs and his ability to bowl in the powerplay will be crucial in providing early breakthroughs, giving CSK an edge over their opponents. In the spin department, Noor Ahmad, the young Afghanistan spinner, offers a refreshing option. His deceptive spin and ability to tie down batters, especially right-handers, in the middle overs will be key in slowing down the opposition’s scoring rate.

The experienced Ravichandran Ashwin remains a central figure in CSK’s bowling setup. As one of the best off-spinners in the world, Ashwin’s ability to out-think opposition batters in the middle overs will be vital in turning the game in CSK's favour. His big-match experience will be crucial when the pressure is on, especially in the latter stages of the tournament.

List of Bowlers: Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Chaudhary, Gurjapneet Singh, Nathan Ellis, Shreyas Gopal, Matheesha Pathirana.

Conclusion: A well-rounded team poised for success

CSK’s squad for IPL 2025 is a well-rounded one, with a perfect balance of youth and experience across all departments. From the stability provided by MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, to the explosive potential of younger players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Rachin Ravindra, the team is built to compete on all fronts. The experienced core of Dhoni, Jadeja, and Ashwin will provide the tactical acumen needed in high-pressure situations, while the younger players bring energy and adaptability to the squad.
