Sam Curran's Power Hitting and Arshdeep's Fiery Bowling Propel Punjab to Victory over Mumbai
The Mumbai Indians lost to Punjab Kings by 13 runs in Match 31 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday despite the blistering half-centuries by Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav. Green blasted 67 off 43 deliveries and Suryakumar Yadav hammered 57 off 26 balls as Mumbai Indians only managed to score 201/6 in 20 overs as they fell short despite a valiant chase after their bowling unit allowed Punjab Kings to post 214/8 after being asked to bat first by Rohit Sharma.
As PBKS rallied in the second half of both innings to win their fourth game in a row and move up to fifth place on the standings, Arshdeep Singh finished with 4-29 runs. When Mumbai needed 31 runs off the final 12 deliveries, they lost their way in the final two overs. Tim David and Tilak Varma scored 15 runs off Nathan Ellis' 19th over, with David hitting a big six and both batsmen exerting significant running effort.
Talking Point from MI vs PBKS: PBKS make death overs count to post 214/8
Asked to take the first strike, PBKS didn’t have a great start, losing opener Mathew Short early for 11 off Cameron Green’s bowling. The other opener Prabhsimran Singh (26) and Atharva Taide (29) posted a stand of 47 runs in 4.1 overs before Arjun Tendulkar dismissed Prabhsimran LBW. Mumbai leg-spinner Piyush Chawla then dismissed Taide and Liam Livingstone (10) in the space of three balls to put the pressure on PBKS.
Stand-in captain Sam Curran and Harpreet Singh then tried to resurrect the innings, but it was going nowhere at 118/4 in 15 overs. Curran and Harpreet then broke the shackles by taking 31 runs off Arjun Tendulkar’s over that included 4 fours and 2 sixes. That over set the tone for the death overs with the PBKS batsmen hammering 65 runs in the last 4 overs. Curran made 29-ball 55 with 5 fours and 4 sixes, while Harpreet cracked 41. The two posted a stand of 92 runs in 8 overs. Jitesh Sharma provided the late firework with a cameo of 7-ball 25 that included 4 sixes.

Arshdeep’s death-over bowling wins it for PBKS
On a flat Wankhede pitch, MI was favourite to chase down 215, but they had a poor start, losing opener Ishan Kishan early for 1. However, captain Rohit Sharma and No 3 Cameron Green then got going, stitching a stand of 76 runs in 8.2 overs before the former was caught and bowled by Liam Livingstone for 27-ball 44. The dismissal brought Suryakumar Yadav who exploited PBKS’s bowling, playing his trademark scoops and flicks to stitch a stand of 75 runs in just 6 overs with Green.
The Aussie then departed for 67 off 43 balls as he holed out in the deep to Curran off Nathan Ellis. SKY continued the run-scoring momentum to reach his first fifty after a string of low scores that included 4 golden ducks. But Arshdeep bowled brilliantly in the death overs to first dismiss SKY for 57, and then defend 16 runs in the last over while bagging two more wickets. Arshdeep ended with 4/29 as MI lost by 13 runs.
Let’s scan the top three performances from the game between MI and PBKS in IPL 2023
Sam Curran’s 55 off 29
Sam Curran was slow to start with, making just 17 runs off the first 15 balls he faced. He was looking to take the game deep as PBKS had lost 4 wickets for 83 runs by the halfway mark. He upped the tempo in the 15h over bowled by Arjun Tendulkar, slamming a six and a four off the first two legitimate balls, setting the tone for his partner Harpreet to follow. He then dealt mostly with boundaries and sixes to maximize the death overs. He cracked two straight sixes in the 18th over bowled by Green to give hopes for a 200-plus total. He also had a go after his English teammate Jofra Archer, cracking 2 fours, before he was dismissed caught, and bowled by Archer. Curran’s first 15 balls got him 17 runs, but his next 14 balls got him 38 runs as he ended his knock with 55 runs off 29 balls.
Arshdeep Singh's 4/29
Arshdeep Singh is one of the best left-arm bowlers in the world currently, and he lived up to the billing in this match. First, he got a big breakthrough for his team, dismissing the dangerous Kishan early. Later, when SKY was looking to run away with the game, Arshdeep came on to bowl the 18th over and made SKY hit straight to the fielder in mid-wicket to turn the tide in his team’s favor. Finally, he finished off the game, defending 16 runs in the last over, while dismissing Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera bowled on consecutive balls while giving away just 2 runs. In the last two overs bowled by Arshdeep in the death overs, he conceded just 11 runs and took three wickets to win the match for his team on a flat Wankhede wicket.
Cameron Green-SKY’s stand of 75 runs in 6 overs
Chasing a big total, Green and Suryakumar Yadav came together at 84/2 in the 10th over and needed to bat at a required run rate of 13 runs per over to win the match. They threw caution to the wind and went hard at PBKS bowling. If Cameron Green was all brutal power, smashing slot balls for sixes, and pulling with disdain, SKY brought all his trademark shots that have been missing from his bat for some time. SKY scooped, flicked, glanced, and regularly pierced the square leg boundary despite fielders positioned at catching spots. The two put a stand of 75 runs in 6 overs to raise hopes for a comfortable win. But although MI lost in the end, their partnership was the highlight of the match as both these stroke players cut different sides of the wicket for their runs.
Points Table Scenario & What's Next
PBKS jumped from 7th to 5th with this win, having won 4 games out of 7. MI slumped from 6th to 7th with this loss. Mumbai faces Gujarat Titans next on April 25, while PBKS plays Lucknow on April 28.
