Talking points: Delhi’s inconsistent batting leads them to exit
Delhi’s inconsistent batting proved to be their nemesis in IPL 2023 as they once again failed to put up a collective batting display to chase down a gettable target of 168 against PBKS. Their star-studded line failed to fire in unison and they fell like a heap after the good start by openers. It denotes their batting throughout this tournament as it has been inconsistent at its best. The loss also sees Delhi losing out of the race for play-offs, but it could spoil other team’s party by winning their remaining two league games.
Prabhsimran the man for PBKS
Asked to take the first strike, opener Shikhar Dhawan smashed a six off the second ball he faced, but perished the next ball for 7, holing out in the deep to Rilee Rossouw off Ishant Sharma’s bowling. Liam Livingstone fell next bowled by Ishant for 4. Jitesh Sharma fell quickly as well, bowled by Axar Patel for 5. Meanwhile, the other opener Prabhsimran Singh looked in complete control, smashing the Delhi bowling attack to all corners of the ground. He built a stand of 72 runs with Sam Curran for the fourth wicket in 9 overs.
Curran fell for 20 off the bowling of Praveen Dubey. While all other PBKS batsmen struggled with the slowness of the pitch, Prabhsimran looked to be in zone as he smashed 16 fours and sixes in total. He reached a well-deserved ton before he fell in the penultimate over, bowled by Mukesh Kumar, for 103 off 65 balls with 10 fours and 6 sixes as PBKS managed 167/7 in 20 overs. Ishant Sharma took 2/27.
Delhi throw away good lost the match, exit from IPL 2023
Delhi had a great start to their innings as David Warner went on a boundary-hitting spree in the first over itself, hitting two fours off the first two balls of the innings from Rishi Dhawan. His partner Phil Salt too joined the party, hitting two fours off Harpreet Brar’s over, the third of the innings. The two posted 69 runs in 6.2 overs before Salt was clean bowled by Brar. It opened the floodgates for Punjab, who dismissed at least one batsman per over till the 11th. Rahul Chahar joined the party dismissing Mitchell Marsh LBW for 3. In the next over bowled by Brar, Rilee Rossouw holed out in the deep for 5, while Warner fell LBW for 54. Chahar dismissed Axar Patel LWB in the next over to all but kill the contest. Brar took his fourth when he dismissed Manish Pandey bowled by a perfect delivery that pitched on leg to turn and hit the top of the off-stump. From 69/0, Delhi innings was in tatters at 88/6. The lower-order resisted, but couldn’t deny Punjab who won the match by 31 runs.
Let’s scan the top three performances from the game between DC and PBKS in IPL 2023
Prabhsimran Singh's maiden IPL hundred (103*)
Prabhsimran Singh, remember the name. He has been in IPL since 2019, but has got just 6 games in 4 seasons. This season, he got an extended run with PBKS and is repaying all the faith showed on him by the team management. He cracked a maiden IPL ton in just the 18th IPL game of his career that spanned five seasons. On a slow Delhi track, he seemed to bat on a different planet. He scored 61 % of his team runs. While he scored 103 runs, the next best score was 20 from Sam Curran. It just emphasised how beautifully he batted as he not only anchored the innings, but also scored at a good strike rate of 158.46. Some of his shots were brutal power, as he generated enough punch on a slow track to hit 6 sixes. The beauty of his knock was that there was no slog, but pure cricketing shots to accumulate the runs.

Harpreet Brar-Rahul Chahar’s 6/46 in 8 overs
At one stage, Delhi openers were looking to run away with the game before the Punjab spinners - Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar - turned the match around with their accurate spin bowling. Brar had conceded 13 runs in his first over, but bounced back to conceded another 17 runs in his next 3 overs and bag four top-order wickets. He first broke the opening stand of 69 runs by dismissing Phil Salt bowled. Rahul Chahar bowled from the other end, and dismissed the dangerous Mitchell Marsh LBW. With the ball turning up a fair bit, both the spinners made merry. Brar then dismissed the threatening David Warner, LBW, given on referral. He also dismissed Rilee Rossouw before Chahar completed the demolition job by taking out the all-rounder Axar Patel. Both the spinners complemented each other, and matched wicket for wicket as they bowled in tandem. The two combined took 6 wickets for 46 runs in 8 overs.
David Warner’s 54 off 27
The Delhi captain has been earlier guilty of batting at an extremely low strike rate for an opener, but he turned things around in this game. He looked extremely comfortable on a dual-paced wicket, and played shots all round the wicket. He drove, cut and pulled with elan and easily looked the best Delhi batsman. As long he was there in the middle, Delhi had a chance of winning the match. However, things turned when PBKS spinner started bowling in tandem, and David Warner fell to a turning delivery despite being on a front foot to overcome the turn, and defend it. Warner cracked 10 fours and 1 six during his knock of 27-ball 54. His knock was so brutal that the whole team combined could manage just 8 fours and sixes while Warner struck 11.
Points Table Scenario & What's Next
With this win, Punjab have moved to the 6th spot, with 6 wins from 12 games, and stay in hunt for play-offs. Delhi’s campaign is almost over, and are currently placed last at the 10th spot, with just four wins in 12 games. Both the teams will clash again in their next match on May 17, with Punjab playing at home.
