Player of the Match: Wanindu Hasaranga (5-18 in four overs)
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who were coming on the back of three successive loses, took on the fourth-ranked Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday afternoon.
In their last meeting, RCB were bowled out for a paltry 68, failing to last even 100 deliveries.
Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to bat first. RCB went in unchanged for the game while SRH handed a debut cap to Afghanistan player, Fazalhaq Farooqi, besides bringing back Jagadeesha Suchith in the team.
Bangalore took revenge to extend SRH’s losing streak
Bangalore had a nightmarish start, losing Virat Kohli on the very first ball of the innings for his third golden duck of the season. New batter, Rajat Patidar repaired the RCB innings on the back of a 105-run stand with captain Faf du Plessis, who cracked 73*.
Even though Glenn Maxwell did try to fire the innings but it was Dinesh Karthik, who with his wild knock of 30* off just eight deliveries, propelled RCB to 192/3 in their 20 overs. In the last five overs, Bangalore collected 67 runs for the loss of Maxwell.
Chasing a huge score, Hyderabad didn’t have the best start losing captain Kane Williamson on the very first ball and since then went on to lose wickets regularly. Rahul Tripathi did shine in the middle for his 58, but Wanindu Hasaranga, with his 5-18, broke their back. Sunrisers were bundled out for 125 to lose their fourth straight game by 67 runs.
Let’s take a look at the top performances from the game between SRH and RCB, IPL 2022:
Fabulous Faf punctured Hyderabad with an unbeaten 73
Bangalore were stunned with first ball dismissal of Virat Kohli for the third time in IPL 2022. Their new captain Faf du Plessis took care of their health since that point though. He contributed his bit in a 105-run stand with Rajat Patidar for the second wicket.
Du Plessis, who prior to this innings, had 335 runs in 14 innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL, began slowly in an aim to understand the behaviour of the track. But he broke jail with a six and four in the last over of the powerplay. He clubbed the pace star, Umran Malik, for 16 runs in just five balls, including two fours and one six.
With a boundary over the extra cover region, Faf reached his third IPL fifty of the season in 33 balls. He loves playing in Wankhede; in 15 IPL innings on this iconic ground, Du Plessis has 531 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 131.4.
He went on to score a huge knock in the end with 73* in 50 balls, but his stay in holding one end under the heat made sure other batters could come and blast from the very first ball.

Hasaranga broke Hyderabad’s back with a fifer
Chasing a huge score of 193, Hyderabad required a good start but they never reached anywhere even close to challenging the score with 50-2 in eight overs. Sri Lanka leg spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, coming into the ninth over of the innings, sent back Aiden Markram on his very second ball for the second time in T20s.
In his second over, he caged the big fish, Nicholas Pooran, at the mid-wicket region for a personal score of 19. It was the second time Hasaranga had Pooran’s number in T20s.
In Hasaranga’s third over, Suchith, in trying to smash the bowler out of the park, saw the bails flashing as Hasaranga picked up his third wicket.
He stretched the fantastic job with two more wickets in his last over in the form of Shashank Singh and Umran Malik to register the second five-wicket haul of IPL 2022. It was also a double wicket maiden 17th over.
It was the seventh time Hyderabad had conceded a fifer in IPL, which is the most in this tournament. Hasaranga, finishing with 5-18, bagged two important points for Bangalore.

Dinesh Karthik displays finishing abilities with a humungous strike rate
Dinesh Karthik has been in terrific form in this season in the finishing job. Coming at the toughest phase of the game, he is doing the hardest job of taking his team to a match-winning total with power-hitting.
When he walked in the middle, just 10 balls were left for RCB to cash in; with the score being 159, they required some serious gunfire at the end. On his fourth ball, Karthik walked across wide to slog a length ball from Kartik Tyagi over the deep mid-wicket boundary for a six.
In the last over, he piled up 22 runs in just four balls against debutant Fazalhaq Farooqi, consisting of three back-to-back sixes and one boundary. In this season, Karthik now has a strike rate of 215.4 in just three games at the Wankhede, with 140 runs in just 65 deliveries. In IPL 2022, Karthik scored 71 runs in just 23 balls in the 20th over at a strike rate of 308.70.
Due to this fantastic box office show, Bangalore raced away to a match-winning total of 192/3.
