Brief Scores: CSK 208-6 (Conway 87, Gaikwad 44*, Nortje 3/42) beat DC 117 (Mitchell Marsh 25, Moeen 3/13) by 91 runs
Player of the Match: Devon Conway (87 runs off 49 balls)
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) raced to their fourth victory in Match 55 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 with a 91-run win over Delhi Capitals (DC) at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy on Sunday. It was CSK’s second win in the last three games under MS Dhoni’s leadership ever since he took over the reins from Ravindra Jadeja.
CSK came into this match-up with Delhi Capitals following their 7th loss of the season to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 13 runs. While Delhi Capitals, so far, having faired with a to and fro approach in the tournament, downed Sunrisers Hyderabad by 21 runs in their last game.
DC, with five wins and as many losses, aimed for a consolidating victory and advance in the tournament, after having already boasted of a good net run rate. DC had dominated the head-to-head match-up against CSK in recent encounters, with a 4-1 record against them. However, their last encounter saw CSK emerging victorious by 4 wickets.
Rishabh Pant wins the toss and puts CSK in to bat
After winning the toss, DC skipper Rishabh Pant opted to field first, as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway came to bat in the middle for CSK. With the help of a 110-run opening stand between Conway and Gaikwad, followed by a 32-run knock from Shivam Dube and a 21-run cameo off just 8 balls from skipper MS Dhoni, CSK managed to post 208/6 in 20 overs. CSK posted their second 200+ score in the last three games, both the times when openers stitched 100+ runs partnership. For DC, Anrich Nortje (42/3) and Khaleel Ahmed (28/2) were the pick of the bowlers, however, it was not enough to stop CSK below 200 runs.
On the other hand, DC batters failed to put up a show and continued to falter at regular intervals. Their top-scorer remained Mitchell Marsh, who scored 25 runs before falling in the trap of Moeen Ali. Skipper Rishabh Pant scored 21 runs off 11 deliveries, including three consecutive boundaries against Maheesh Theekshana. But he also gave away his wicket to Moeen Ali and subsequently DC lost the entire plot to eventually succumb to their sixth defeat in IPL 2022.

Devon Conway’s pyrotechnics steers CSK’s total to 208/6
Devon Conway’s return has proven to be a good omen for CSK in terms of a strengthened batting unit. With scores of 85* & 56 in the last two innings, Conway stepped on to the field with the same mettle as Ruturaj Gaikwad. He started his knock rather calmly with just a boundary in the first two overs. He started ruffling the DC camp by clobbering two consecutive sixes off Axar Patel’s spell in the 5th over.
In no time, combined with precision from Conway and Gaikwad, CSK’s opening stand crossed the 50-run mark which was also the third consecutive fifty-run partnership between the duo for CSK this season. What came next was a nightmare for the tournament’s leading wicket-taker of this season Kuldeep Yadav. He was taken aback by Conway, who lambasted the chinaman for 37 runs at a stupendous strike rate of 336.4 in their face-off of just 11 deliveries. En route, Conway also reached his third fifty in IPL, all coming in succession for CSK.
The menacing opening duo of Gaikwad and Conway also brought up the second 100-run stand for CSK against Delhi Capitals. Then came Conway’s havoc against Kuldeep in the 10th over that gave 16 runs to CSK. The duo managed to add another 10 runs, before Anrich Nortje came for his second over and got DC their first wicket by sending back Gaikwad, who was batting on 41 runs off 33 balls. Gaikwad misread the length and miscued the ball towards mid-wicket where Axar Patel gobbled him up. CSK’s score was 110/1 after 11 overs, with Conway on 64* and new batter Shivam Dube at the crease.
Conway furthered his knock by adding 23 more runs, before Khaleel Ahmed came and spoiled CSK’s party by dismissing the southpaw at 87 runs off 49 balls. Conway’s fine knock came to an end when CSK’s score was 170/2 after 17 overs. However, he prospected a big total for CSK by striking the ball at 177.55, laced with 7 boundaries and 5 sixes as CSK posted 208/6 after 20 overs.

Moeen Ali’s 3/13 hooks three big DC fishes
Chasing a daunting target of 208, DC lost the momentum early on in their innings. They suffered the first jolt in the second over when Simarjeet Singh, who played his third game for CSK, trapped Srikar Bharat (8) leg before wicket.
DC lost David Warner (19) shortly after Bharat’s dismissal as they were bruising at 36/2 in 4.2 overs. From there on, DC never came back in the game and went on to lose wickets. Moeen Ali came to bowl in the eighth over and first dismissed Mitchell Marsh (25), as the latter failed to clear the long-on and DC lost their third wicket.
Moeen Ali came back again in the 10th over, only to rub salt on DC’s wounds by chipping in for his second wicket in the form of Ripal Patel (6). DC’s score was lurking at 82/5 with half the team back to the pavilion after 10 overs. In the 14th over, Moeen took his third wicket and sent back the biggest fish, DC skipper Rishabh Pant for a personal score of 21. He also registered the second-best bowling figures in IPL, the best being 3/7 against Rajasthan Royals.

Mukesh Choudhary nails down Rovman Powell and Axar Patel
It was CSK’s day to reckon, with all due diligence put in by their bowlers, following a commendable performance from the batting unit.
The 25-year-old Mukesh Choudhary crushed the final hopes of DC with his remarkable spell. He got two quick wickets in the 11th over by first taking down Axar Patel (1) with a gun delivery, hijacking straight into the stumps for DC’s sixth wicket. Mukesh followed suit with another wicket of Rovman Powell (3), thereby sealing the lid on DC’s hopes to stay in the game. Mukesh Choudhary, with his formidable performance, ended with a spell of 2/22 in three overs.

TATA IPL 2022 Points Table
Qualification Scenarios
From here on, DC’s journey to the playoffs only becomes difficult due to their inconsistency. They have lost two matches in a row, which brings down their winning percentage below 50 now. On the other hand, CSK (8 points) have virtually been knocked out of the playoffs race, barring a very remote possibility which will depend on a lot of permutations and combinations. However, they have emerged as a brute force to reckon with under MS Dhoni’s leadership and could own the second half of the tournament with back-to-back wins.
What’s to come
DC will go face-to-face with Rajasthan Royals at the same venue on May 11 while CSK will meet their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in the second El Classico of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 12.
