Brief Score: IND 86/4 (S. Gill 31, Y. Jaiswal 30, A. Patel 2/33) trails NZ 235 (D. Mitchell 82, W. Young 71, R. Jadeja 5/65) by 149 runs.

In a high-stakes encounter, India stepped onto the field at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium, determined to avoid a clean sweep against New Zealand in the third and final Test of the series. Spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar shared nine wickets between them as India bowled out New Zealand for 235 on Day 1. Besides Daryl Mitchell and Will Young, other Kiwi batters struggled to bat against the Jadeja-Sundar spin-magic. The India top-order collapsed as the hosts posted 86/4 at Stumps, in response to NZ's 235.

Talking Point: Rohit-Virat continues to fail as a batter, need to buckle up

Rohit Sharma’s poor run of form in Test cricket continued after he fell cheaply in the first innings of India’s third Test against New Zealand in Mumbai. The India captain was dismissed for 18 (18) by Matt Henry as he edged him to second slip. In the ongoing series, Rohit has scored only 80 runs from five innings at an average of 16. He is currently struggling to deliver his signature powerful performances with the bat and hence needs to buckle up now.

Meanwhile, star India batter Virat Kohli has also been struggling to find his form in the longest format for a long time as his numbers have plummeted significantly. A miscommunication cost Virat Kohli (4) his wicket in a run out. Kohli has scored just 92 runs in the five innings at an average of 18.40 in the ongoing three-match series against New Zealand. It's high time for Kohli to fine-tune his technique and embrace some new strategies to gain back his form.

Washington Sundar shines as New Zealand reach 92/3 at lunch

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham won the toss and opted to bat first in the third Test in Mumbai. Akash Deep got the first breakthrough for India with the wicket of Devon Conway in the fourth over. Whereas, Washington Sundar continued his rich vein of form as he dismissed the Kiwi skipper Tom Latham and the dangerous looking Rachin Ravindra in quick succession. It left New Zealand's score at 92/3 at Lunch on Day 1.

Daryl Mitchell battles on after Ravindra Jadeja’s triple strike, NZ 192/6 at Tea

Left-arm spinner, Ravindra Jadeja helped India reduce New Zealand to 192/6 at tea on Day 1 by taking three wickets after the drinks break in the punishing heat and humidity of Mumbai. Will Young and Daryl Mitchell braved the conditions at the Wankhede to stay alive through the first hour after Lunch.

Young scored a masterful half-century but fell shortly after the drinks break. Jadeja dismissed Young and Tom Blundell in one over before he got the better of Glenn Phillips later in the innings. Meanwhile, the intense heat at the stadium made things more difficult for Mitchell who was at the crease for a while.

Jadeja picks his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests, NZ bundle out on 235

New Zealand were bowled out for 235 runs in their first innings against India on Day 1 in Mumbai. Daryl Mitchell was at his gritty best, but narrowly missed out on his ton, losing his wicket to Washington Sundar in the third session. Mitchell, who put on the fight for New Zealand with a terrific 82, got good support from Will Young (71).

However, other batters failed to play promising knocks. Ravindra Jadeja took his 14th Test five-wicket haul by taking two quick wickets inside the first hour of the third session. Jadeja dismissed Ish Sodhi and Matt Henry in the same over to achieve the milestone. With four wickets to his credit, Sundar also helped the hosts' cause.

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal started the proceedings for India. However, Rohit once again got dismissed cheaply. Trailing by 149 runs India ended up with 86/4 against New Zealand at the end of the Day 1. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten at the crease at stumps. India was in a comfortable position at 78/1 before losing three wickets for six runs in the closing stages of the day’s play.
