India won a thriller against England by 2 wickets in Chennai in the second T20I on Saturday. Tilak Varma played a brilliant knock of 72 not out to steer India to a tricky chase of 166 in the last over, with four balls to spare. India went 2-0 up in the five-match T20I series.

Talking Point from IND vs ENG, 2nd T20I

Tilak has made the No 3 spot in T20Is his own, with four unbeaten innings in his previous four T20Is since he was promoted to play one down. He has scored 318 runs without getting dismissed in his last four T20Is. But this knock of 72 not out has proved Tilak can mould his game to play the anchor role and take the team to victory.

India restrict England to 165/9

India asked England to take the first strike and the move paid dividends in the first over. Arshdeep Singh got England opener Phil Salt to hole out to the deep square leg fielder Washington Sundar. The other opener Ben Duckett fell after an attempted reverse sweep saw the ball loop to Dhruv Jurel in the off-side. Captain Jos Buttler came out all guns blazing, looking to maximize the power play. He took the Indian spinners to the task, as England coasted to around 10 runs per over by the power play.

However, Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Harry Brook and bowled to pull things back. Meanwhile, Buttler was looking dangerous and cutting loose, but he failed to clear the fielder at midwicket boundary off Axar Patel. Buttler made 30-ball 45 with 2 fours and 3 sixes. India spinners then tightened the screws as England were reduced to 104/6 by the 13th over. No 8 batter Brydon Carse played a cameo of 17-ball 31 with 1 four and 3 sixes to take England’s total to a fighting total of 165/9. Axar and Chakravarthy took two wickets apiece.

Tilak Anchors the Chase

India made a great start to the chase, with opener Abhishek Sharma smashing three fours in the first over bowled by Jofra Archer. However, Abhishek lost his wicket in the next over as a delivery from Mark Wood straightened up to catch the batter in front of the stumps. Sanju Samson then fails to clear the boundary, holing out in the deep to Carse off Archer’s bowling. Tilak then wrested the momentum from India, smashing 1 four and 2 sixes off the fifth over of the innings bowled by Archer.

Tilak’s slog-swept for a six over square leg against Archer was arguably the best shot of the match.  However, England fought back to dismiss India captain Suryakumar Yadav who played on against Carse. India lost two more wickets in Dhruv Jurel and Hardik Pandya, slumping from 58/2 to 78/5. However, Tilak played responsibly in anchoring the innings. However, things got tricky when India needed 40 runs from 30 balls with three wickets. But Tilak took on Archer, smacking 2 sixes and 1 four to wrest the momentum.

Soon Axar and Arshdeep threw their wickets away to give England back the advantage. However, No 10 batter Ravi Bishnoi played sensibly, cracking two boundaries in the death overs to keep India in the hunt. With six to get in the final over, Tilak took a brace and smacked a four to seal a thriller. Tilak Varma made 72 not out off 55 balls with 4 fours and 5 sixes. Carse took three wickets for 29 runs.
