Brief Scores: IND vs ENG, First ODI: India 251/6 (Shubman Gill 87, Shreyas Iyer 59, Saqib Mahmood 2/47) beat England 248 (Jos Buttler 52, Jacob Bethel 51, Ravindra Jadeja 3/26)by 4 wickets. India lead the series 1-0.

India made a triumphant return to the ODI return by comprehensively beating the visiting English team by six wickets. Earlier in the day, three wicket hauls from debutant Harshit Rana and veteran Ravindra Jadeja restricted England to a mediocre 248 before the batters led by Gill and Iyer madequick work of the chase.

Talking Points: Rohit Sharma’s failure at the top of the order

India skipper Rohit Sharma's woes with the bat continued in the first ODI as well where the right-hander playing his favored format got out for just 2. He never looked comfortable in his 9-ball stay at the crease and will this hurt India in the coming games.

With the Champions Trophy in the corner, the men in blue will hope Rohit finds his touch back in the next two games.

Ravindra Jadeja keep England in check with a three-wicket haul

England winning the toss had a blazing start to their batting innings with the highlight being Phil Salt hammering 26 runs off Harshit Rana’s third over. They were going with all guns until the ninth over where a miscommunication in running cost Salt his wicket. Rana brought India back by scalping both Ben Duckett and Harry Brook in the same over as England from 75/0 slumped to 77/3 in the matter of seven balls.

Things slowed down because of this mini collapse and Ravindra Jadeja sent back experienced Joe Root for 19. Skipper Jos Buttler and young batter Jacob Bethel scored their respective half-centuries and added 59 runs for the fifth wicket. Bethel along with useful hands from the lower order pushed England’s total to 248, not a match-winning score by any means. Read More: IND vs ENG, ODIs, 2024-25: Key match ups to watch out for

India loses openers cheaply but Gill, Axar and Iyer hand them a win

India in their pursuit of a middling target lost both their openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the piece. However, Shreyas Iyer batting at No.4 came with an attacking mindset as he along with Shubman Gill brought up their 50-run stand in mere 28 balls with the former hammering 35 off them.

Shreyas got to this fifty off just 30 balls and his entertaining stay ended when on 59 by Jacob Bethel. However, his knock ascended India into a comfortable 111/3 at the end of 16 overs. His good work was continued by Axar Patel, who was promoted up the order and he stitched a match-winning 108 run stand for the fourth wicket with Gill.
