Brief Score: BAN 107/3 (M Haque 40*, N Shanto 31, Akash Deep 2/34) at Stumps on Day 1.

Bad light and rain stopped play on Day 1 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur. Mominul Haque’s innings helped the visitors get to 107/3 at stumps. Akash Deep was the pick of the bowlers for India with a couple of wickets, meanwhile Ravichandran Ashwin chipped in with one wicket in the second session. At the crease were Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim, who did well to bring up the 100 for the Tigers before the day’s play was called off.

Talking Point: India exhibit confident pace bowling, Akash Deep shines

India skipper Rohit Sharma showed confidence in his pace bowling unit. He opted for three pacers on black soil which generally helps spinners. Rohit expected his three seamers to make use of the overcast conditions as India went unchanged. Fast bowler Akash Deep made an immediate impact, claiming two crucial wickets in quick succession to put the visitors on the back foot in the first session. He displayed his potential yet again with an impressive performance with the red cherry.

Deep was introduced in the ninth over. On his third ball, he had Zakir Hasan walking at him and edging one low to the right of gully, where Yashasvi Jaiswal grabbed the ball with both hands, inches above the ground. A few overs later, Akash Deep struck again. Continuing around the wicket, he got one to beat Shadman Islam’s inside edge and hit him on the pad.

Akash Deep strike twice, Bangladesh reach 74/2 at lunch

The opening day of the second Test match was delayed by an hour due to a wet outfield as it rained heavily throughout the night before the game. India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first. India pacer Akash Deep struck twice in the first hour but Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque helped them recover to 74/2 at Lunch. They added 45 in an unbroken third-wicket stand to make sure the game was in the balance at lunch.

Deep made early inroads with the ball, dismissing both Bangladesh openers early in the first session. He got the ball rolling with the dismissal of Zakir Hasan for a 24-ball duck as Yashasvi Jaiswal took a stunning catch at gully. The Bengal pacer also showed Shadman Islam (24) his way back with a brilliant DRS. While there was no rain for much of the day, drizzles appeared in the last over of the first session.

Bangladesh 107/3 as rain forces early stumps

Play was called off on Day 1 just after nine overs in the second session, with rain and bad light playing spoilsport. Ravichandran Ashwin ended the 51-run stand between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque early in the second session by dismissing the former. The start of the session itself was 15 minutes late with rain making an appearance exactly in the last over of the first session. Bangladesh ended the day on 107/3 after 35 overs with Mominul Haque batting on 40 off 81 balls while Mushfiqur Rahim is on 6 off 13 balls.

What’s to come

There is a forecast for more rain in the next two days. However, Bangladesh will look to bat as much as they can on Day 2 and make sure they post a big first innings total. Meanwhile, the home team will look to bowl the visitors out as soon as possible.
