Veteran India batter Virat Kohli had a disastrous return to test cricket during the first Test match against Bangladesh. He was dismissed for just six runs while trying to drive a delivery outside the off-stump from Bangladesh speedster Hasan Mahmud. Kohli has shown a particular vulnerability to deliveries angled outside the off-stump. This area has been a consistent source of trouble for him, leading to several dismissals over the years.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bowl against India in the first Test of the two-match series at Chepauk. The visitors got off to a brilliant start in the opening session. Hasan Mahmud was tremendous with the bowl as his opening spell rocked India’s top order. Yashasvi Jaiswal stood strong while wickets fell around him, grounding out his fifth Test half-century in 95 balls. India lost Rishabh Pant early in the second session after he put up a 62-run stand with Jaiswal for the fourth wicket. KL Rahul played a few good shots as well. However, Nahid Rana got Jaiswal out while Rahul fell victim to Mehidy Hasan. India lost six wickets including the mighty Jaiswal for 56. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja stitched a good partnership as India's score read 176/6 at the end of the second session. The local lad played some good looking shots at the start of his innings.
Ashwin-Jadeja’s record 195* runs partnership revives India
A fantastic counter-attacking century (102*) from Ravichandran Ashwin and an outstanding effort of 86* runs from Ravindra Jadeja assisted India in making a great recovery after a top-order collapse. Their collective effort took India past the 300-run mark. Ashwin took just 108 balls to reach the milestone in the final session. A century-plus partnership between the two experienced players allowed India to gain a stronghold at the end of the opening day game. The Bangladesh bowlers looked completely out of touch in the third session against the Ashwin-Jadeja duo.
What’s to come?
India will look to put up a huge score on the board in the first innings to put Bangladesh out of the contest. Bangladesh need some quick wickets early on. They will have the second new ball available right away. Early conditions might be testing for the batters and the visitors will look to strike.
