In what can only be described as a nail-biting cricket match that seemed destined for a draw, the Men in Blue, led by Rohit Sharma, managed to pull off a spectacular victory against Bangladesh. Picture this: only 35 overs were bowled in the first three days, making the prospect of a thrilling finish feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Yet, against all odds, India emerged triumphant with half a day to spare. India fans must be rising in applause, possibly even shedding a tear of joy.

Every player in Team India deserves a hearty round of applause, but let us shine a spotlight on Gautam Gambhir, the newly minted head coach. Known for his aggressive and relentless approach during his playing days, Gambhir has transformed the current squad's mentality, instilling that same fire in their bellies. His mission was simple: cultivate a winning instinct within players who already possess immense talent. And by all accounts, it appears he has succeeded remarkably.

As the match happened

As the match went on, the momentum swung in India’s favour when Bangladesh folded for 233 runs in their first innings during the second session on Day 4. With just over five sessions remaining, the Kanpur Test seemed destined for a draw. Already two and a half days were disrupted, leading to some well-deserved criticism of the facilities at Green Park, one of India’s oldest Test venues. However, the clouds finally cleared, and the sun shone brightly, paving the way for India to make a bold statement.

The highlights of India’s performance on Tuesday were nothing short of sensational. Ravindra Jadeja’s triple strike initiated a collapse for Bangladesh during the first session, leading them to a dismal total of 146. By the time India began their chase, they had already taken a significant lead, and the excitement in the air was palpable. Rishabh Pant hit the winning runs following a blistering 43-ball fifty from Yashasvi Jaiswal, a man with nerves of steel. This victory not only solidified India’s position at the top of the World Test Championship points table but also completed a 2-0 series sweep against Bangladesh.

Intent to win

Interestingly, India batted for a mere 312 deliveries in this Test match—remarkably, the second-fewest they have faced to win a Test, behind only their 281 balls against South Africa in Cape Town earlier this year. It was a performance characterised by urgency and intent, showcasing the players’ determination to seize the moment.

Let’s talk about that aggressive approach. Each of the top six Indian batters, except Rishabh Pant, maintained a strike rate of over 100 in the first innings, which is no small feat. Even the tail-ender, Akash Deep, decided to throw caution to the wind, smashing a few lusty blows before inevitably throwing his wicket away. This all-out aggression wasn’t just for show; it was a carefully crafted strategy. The team management, spearheaded by Gambhir, made it abundantly clear that settling for a draw was not an option.

Gambhir’s bold call

Bowling coach Morne Morkel emphasised the collective mindset of the batting group in the post-match press conference. “It was a massive call to push for a win,” he said. Gambhir’s message to the team was to take the game forward as quickly as possible. The urgency was palpable, and as time slipped away, India played with a contagious intensity.

Gambhir’s transition from an aggressive cricketer to a fearless coach has been seamless. His emphasis on an attacking mindset has revitalised the team’s approach. Morkel noted, “You need a leader from the front to drive that mentality.” And it certainly seemed like Rohit Sharma, under the guidance of Gambhir, was leading from the front, making sure the players understood the gravity of the situation as they faced time constraints.

Rohit Sharma set the tone right from the start, smashing a six off the very first ball of his innings. This audacious play sent a clear signal to Bangladesh that India was not here to play safe. The pitch may have had its quirks, with unpredictable bounce, but India’s aggressive stance left their opponents reeling from the get-go.

Starting the series with winning mindset

Gambhir had emphasised before the series against Bangladesh that the focus would be on playing with intent and decisiveness. In a press conference in Chennai, he stated that complacency had no place in their strategy. He highlighted the significance of senior players like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, both of whom were expected to play pivotal roles in the series.

This kind of forward-thinking is what Gambhir has brought to the table. His approach wasn’t merely about winning matches. It was about cultivating a mindset that celebrates aggressive cricket. Under his guidance, the team has embraced a philosophy of taking calculated risks and playing with flair. The way they capitalised on the brief opportunities presented to them speaks volumes about Gambhir’s influence.

Gambhir’s assertive style has provided a refreshing direction, helping players express themselves without the constant fear of failure. With Gambhir’s keen eye for detail and focus on a champion mindset, it’s no wonder that Team India have emerged stronger than ever and are ready to conquer Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and then march towards the World Test Championship final.
