After a stunning display of big hitting masterclass and following up with a demolishing act with the ball against the defending champions England at Wankhede, South Africa took on Bangladesh at the same venue on Tuesday in 23rd game of CWC 2023.

South Africa skipper Aiden Markram opted to bat as expected and the team made just a solitary change with Lungi Ngidi missing out in the favor of Lizaad Williams. For Bangladesh, skipper Shakib Al Hasan returns to lead the side.

Talking Points from South Africa vs Bangladesh game

South Africa’s Splendid Display of Batting

The major talking points has to be the attacking be South Africa’s batting performances at the death overs. In this game, the Proteas made a staggering 144 in the last 10 overs with sizeable score coming from the bat of Klaasen, Miller and de Kock. However, this is not the only instance as in the game against England, South Africa made 143/2 in the same phase with Klaasen and Jansen making most of the damage.

Strategic Wickets in Powerplay

Bangladesh, being asked to bowl, had a great start in the power plays as they picked 2 wickets (of Reeza Hendricks and Van der Dussen) in that phase. However, what followed was a carnage by the opener Quinton de Kock who continued his sensational run of form. He first had a 131-run stand with skipper Markram (60) for the 3rd wicket and then a match-defining 132-run stand from about 14 overs with Klaasen for the 4th wicket to take SA total past 300. In the end, finishing flourishes from Klaasen and David Miller, helped the Proteas a massive 382/5.

Mahmudullah’s Century Saves the Game for Bangladesh

Bangladesh, in response, had a torrid start as in the opening powerplay, they lost 3 of their top 4 batters with just 35 on the board. South Africa pacers had a field day at Mumbai just like they had a few days prior. There was no coming back for the tigers from the initial jolt and despite Mahmudullah’s fighting century where he scored run-a-ball 111, Bangladesh suffered a massive loss of 149 runs.

The South Africa keeper playing his last ODI produced yet another masterclass in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. In the first 2 games against Sri Lanka and Australia, the opener made centuries each and began the tournament in style. Quinton de Kock followed it up with 2 low scores and came the Bangladesh game, he once again showed class.

He took advantage of the great batting conditions on display coupled with some average Bangladesh bowling to register his 3rd century of WC coming in 101 balls. He eventually scored his 3rd 150+ score in ODI and was well set to make his maiden double. But against the run of play, de Kock lost his wicket but not before making a spectacular 174 from 140 balls, that included 7 sixes.

Heinrich Klaasen follows his rollicking century with a cracking 90 off 49

At present, there is a better player in the middle-order than South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen and he proved it once again at the biggest stage. After making a stunning 69-ball 109 in the last game against England last game, Klaasen came at the fall of Markram’s wicket with the score on 167/3 in the 31stover, almost like the England game.

The right-hander resumed from where he left-off the other day by smashing 2 sixes early on. This gave him the momentum as he hit 6 more maximums and in the process reached his 50 off just 34 balls. He eventually missed out on a well-deserved ton by 10 runs.

Mahmudullah wages a lone battle for Bangladesh

The veteran batter who was not initially in Bangladesh's World Cup scheme of things, showed his true class when all seemed lost for the team at Mumbai. He came when Bangladesh was tottering at 4/42 in the 12th over and saved his team from an embarrassing collapse.

Having made a couple of 40s in the last 2 games, Mahmudullah went one step further to score his 3rd century in World Cups and 6th overall in ODIs and was a pity that he didn’t get any support. This took the Bangladesh score past 230 and gave some respectability.
