Talking Points from New Zealand vs Netherlands, Hyderabad

New Zealand’s top-order conundrum & Glenn Phillips's lack of runs

The black caps' top order is doing well; however, if their star batter, Kane Williamson, comes in, it will be challenging for management to decide who will get dropped. Williamson is a world-class batter who can rebuild the innings as needed. NZ batters Rachin & Will Young have proved themselves in recent times. Ravindra's current form + the bowling advantage he gives will make it difficult to drop him. Moreover, he can also open the innings, as he did in one of the warm-up matches and did well. NZ team management must make some tough decisions in the coming games.

Another concern is Glenn Phillips' lack of runs. He flourished in the past, but his recent form has become a concern for the management. He needs more runs to keep his position safe in the playing 11.

Young, Ravindra & Latham's fifties assisted NZ put on a strong total

The Netherlands won the toss and chose to bowl first against New Zealand. The Dutch put on a decent show with the ball. The proceedings kicked off with the Netherlands bowling three consecutive maiden overs. The fact that none of the NZ batters managed to kick on to a really big score - Young’s 70 was their highest - is a credit to some encouraging bowling by the Netherlands. For the Kiwis, Deven Conway & Will Young started slow. The pair added 67 runs before Conway was dismissed. Rachin Ravindra supported Young in building a good score. Skipper Latham scored 53 runs before the innings finally concluded with Santner’s unbeaten 36 in 17 balls.

Despite fighting bravely, the Orange Army couldn’t make it to a positive finish. They battled well on occasions but couldn’t click as a unit. Colin Ackermann gave a tough fight but got dismissed on 69. On the other hand, Kiwi all-rounder Santner bowled one of his best bowling figures, picking five wickets. M. Henry, too, added 3 wickets in New Zealand's win.

Will Young's 70 runs helped the Black Caps post a challenging score

Will Young was the best batter for the Kiwis. A Smooth 70 runs off 80 balls from him assisted NZ to strengthen their position in their 2nd CWC game against the Dutch team. He notched his sixth ODI fifty with some really good cricketing shots. He, with other batters, gave NZ some momentum against the Dutch bowlers, who exploited the slowness of the track with an assortment of slow balls & cutters. It was Young who broke the manacles, driving pacer Ryan through mid-off.

Colin Ackermann fought bravely

After losing three wickets early in the innings, Ackermann played his part perfectly. He scored 69 runs off 73 balls before his innings ended as spinner Mitchell Santner dismissed him. For a moment, his fifty kept the Dutch in the hunt. His performance with the bat will give him some confidence moving ahead in the tournament.
