Brief Scores: ENG 364/9 (Malan 140, Root 82, Hasan 4/71) beat BAN 227 (Litton 76, Rahim 51, Topley 4/43) by 137 runs

Player of the Match: Dawid Malan (140 runs off 107 balls)

After a dominant display against Afghanistan, Bangladesh faced defending champions England on Tuesday, October 10, at Dharamsala's Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in World Cup 2023. The head-to-head record for England and Bangladesh in 50-overs World Cup stood at 2-2 going into this game.

Talking point: High time for Livingstone, Brook and Curran to step up with the bat

If one carefully analyses Tuesday’s game, England batters were brilliant in putting up a total of 364. They already had made 298 runs within 40 overs and could have easily aimed at 400 with the kind of power hitters they have in their team. But they significantly slowed down in the last 10 overs scoring a mere 66 runs. Liam Livingstone, Harry Brook and Sam Curran are the main players who have to look into their batting performances and start contributing for the team.

England's comprehensive all-round performance shatters Bangladesh

England proved their commitment to ODI cricket, with a one off-game against New Zealand not tarnishing their eight-year white-ball revolution. Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan started cautiously but later attacked, both reaching their fifties. Bangladesh surely missed a trick in not getting Bairstow early on. The England batter in question had got out 11 times to the pacers in overs 1-10 in 22 outings since World Cup 2019.

Joe Root contributed with a customary fifty, while Malan scored a massive hundred. However, England slowed down in the last 10 overs, thanks to three wickets from Shoriful Islam and four from Mahedi Hasan. They managed 364 runs which still was a dangerous total with that slow outfield.

Bangladesh faced a herculean challenge in their pursuit of the target. This was primarily due to Reece Topley's impressive performance which saw him take down Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and captain Shakib Al Hasan early on. The trio could manage poor scores of 1, 0, and 1, respectively.

While a glimmer of hope emerged briefly during Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim's partnership, it was clear that reaching the daunting target was an extremely uphill battle. The England bowlers' effectiveness resulted in an ever increasing required run rate for Bangladesh. Eventually, wickets tumbled for Bangladesh, resulting in a 137-run defeat for them.

Malan's 140 powers England to their third-highest World Cup total

The opening pair of Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow took a cautious approach against the Bangladesh bowlers initially. In the 7th over, Malan launched the attack with a six off Mustafizur Rahman, capitalising on a short ball for a pull shot. In the following delivery, Mustafizur failed to execute a yorker that ended up in a full toss. Malan accepted the gift by sending it straight to mid-on for a four. He then targeted Hasan, adding another boundary. Surviving a close caught-behind review early in his innings, Malan remained in control, scoring a half-century off just 39 balls. Their 100-run partnership came in the first 20 overs, with Malan consistently finding boundaries against every bowler.

Malan's impressive innings of 140 runs off 107 balls came at a strike rate of 130.84. He was eventually dismissed by a Hasan delivery that got an inside edge and crashed into the stumps. He accumulated 16 boundaries and 5 sixes in his innings.

Joe Root's vital 82 adds to Malan's century in building a big total

Joe Root's 82 significantly contributed to the team's substantial total, complementing Malan's century. Root opened his boundary account with a shot off Hasan. Then he gave special treatment to Mustafizur, taking advantage of his short length delivery and smashing a flat six over fine leg. Root showed exceptional instinct with a reverse dab against Shakib, guiding the ball beautifully past the keeper for four. His dominance over Shakib continued as he pulled a delivery over mid-wicket for another boundary.

In total, Root amassed impressive 82 runs off 68 balls, boasting a strike rate of 120.58. His innings included eight fours and a six.

Reece Topley strikes early, disrupting Bangladesh's batting

Coming in the second over, Reece Topley's bowling was nothing short of spectacular as he caused mayhem in the Bangladesh camp. On the fourth delivery, he outsmarted Tanzid by delivering a short of length ball that swerved away from the left-hander. Tanzid attempted a tentative defensive push but ended up offering a catch to Bairstow stationed at second slip.

To make matters worse, Shanto received a full-length delivery from Topley in the next delivery and was left with no choice but to nick a thick edge. Fortunately for Topley and his team, Livingstone didn't let the opportunity slip at backward point. Topley's dominance persisted as he swiftly secured two wickets in two balls.

With an unplayable delivery that left Bangladesh skipper Shakib no chance, Topley shattered his stumps in the 5th over, claiming his third victim in impeccable fashion by hitting the top of off stump.

His three early wickets sent Bangladesh batting lineup to the backseat as they fell way behind in the game, chasing a total of 350+.

In the 31st over, Topley dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim, a result of a poor shot choice by the batter, promptly capitalised on by the bowler. Thus, Topley ended his spell with four wickets for 43 runs at an economy of 4.30.
