Brief Scores: BAN 228 (T Hridoy 100, J Ali 68, M Shami 5/53) lost to IND 231/4 (S Gill 101*, KL Rahul 41*, R Hossain 2/38) by 6 wickets.

Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 101 and Mohammed Shami’s 5/53 helped India kick off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in Dubai. KL Rahul provided crucial support and finished the match in style with a six, sealing India’s victory in 46.3 overs. Meanwhile, Shami broke multiple records as India bowled out Bangladesh for 228 after they opted to bat first.

Talking Point: India need develop a middle overs bowling strategy

Team India needs to develop better strategies and bowling options to take wickets during the middle overs of a limited-overs innings, a crucial phase of the game. India struggled in this period against Bangladesh, as after the 9th over, the next wicket did not fall until the 45th-46th over. This highlights a major concern regarding their inability to break partnerships and assert dominance when it matters most. India can certainly make adjustments by rotating bowlers effectively.

Captain Rohit Sharma will need to manage his bowlers carefully in the middle overs, especially when batters start settling into a rhythm. He must identify the bowlers most likely to provide breakthroughs. Spinners like Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, or Kuldeep Yadav can be key options with their variations. Additionally, Hardik Pandya could prove useful in this phase, using subtle changes in pace or aggressive short-pitched deliveries to pick up crucial wickets. Shami registers record-breaking 5/53, Hridoy’s century powers Bangladesh to 228

Mohammed Shami started his tournament on a high, picking up a five-wicket haul, while Towhid Hridoy battled cramps to score a fighting 100 off 118 balls.

Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bangladesh had the worst possible start, losing their first wicket with just one run on the board in the first over and their second wicket in the next over with only two runs. They slumped to 35/5 at one stage, but Towhid and Jaker Ali stitched a crucial partnership, taking them to 189 before Jaker departed for 68.

Hridoy made the most of his second life after being dropped in the slips on his first ball—a costly mistake from Rohit Sharma that denied Axar Patel a hat-trick. The spinner had dismissed Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim off consecutive deliveries before inducing another edge from Hridoy. Besides Shami’s record-breaking five-wicket haul, Harshit Rana picked up three wickets, while Axar Patel claimed two for India.

Shubman Gill smashes second consecutive ODI ton, steers India to victory

Shubman Gill showcased why he is the World No. 1 ODI batter, scoring a resilient century off 125 balls. Earlier, Rohit Sharma gave India a quick start, as he often does, while chasing a target of 229. He put up a 69-run opening stand with Gill before falling to Taskin Ahmed for 41 off 36 balls. Despite the modest target, India had to work hard on a sluggish Dubai pitch. Gill anchored the chase, and while wickets fell regularly at the other end, he finally found a stable partner in KL Rahul.

Gill remained unbeaten on 101 off 129 balls, while Rahul, who struck the winning runs with a six, finished on 41 not out. Their unbeaten partnership of 87 off 98 balls ensured India’s victory. This was Gill’s second consecutive century in ODI cricket. Read More: Top 5 pacers to watch out for in Champions Trophy 2025
