IPL 2026: What are the top five match-ups to watch out for that could shape results this season?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been more than just a contest between two teams but a stage where individual rivalries and match-ups dictate terms. In the preceding seasons of IPL, we have seen memorable duels on the field between a batter and a bowler.
As we gear up for the new season, there are expectations of seeing several contests within the main contest. So here in this piece, we will take a look at five such key battles/ match-ups that could define a particular game.
Virat Kohli vs Jasprit Bumrah
The face-off between two of India’s finest is always a treat to watch. In the IPL, Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli have gone head-to-head across 12 seasons now, with Kohli scoring 150 runs off 101 balls against the Mumbai Indians pacer.
Interestingly, Kohli was Bumrah’s first-ever IPL wicket back in the 2013 season in Bengaluru. Since then, the contest has been evenly matched, with Bumrah dismissing Kohli five times in total at an average of 30, underlining his ability to challenge even the best in the game.
While the IPL remains Kohli’s primary white-ball tournament, he continues to operate at the peak of his powers, as seen in the previous season. Bumrah, meanwhile, is coming off a successful T20 World Cup campaign where he finished as the leading wicket-taker. All signs point to another mouth-watering contest when these two modern greats face off on April 12 at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit Sharma vs Marco Jansen
Marco Jansen has emerged as one of the most improved all-round cricketers in recent years, making an impact with both bat and ball across formats. One of his biggest strengths in T20 cricket has been his ability to strike early with the new ball, particularly in the powerplay.
The left-arm pacer, set to represent Punjab Kings (PBKS), has picked up 51 wickets in the first six overs since 2023, making him a dangerous prospect in the upcoming IPL season. One intriguing match-up to watch will be against Mumbai Indians’ veteran opener Rohit Sharma.
Much like Kohli, Rohit Sharma primarily features in the IPL but remains highly effective, scoring 342 runs in the powerplay since 2024 at a strike rate of over 150 across T20s. With both Jansen and Rohit looking to dominate the powerplay phase, it will be fascinating to see who comes out on top when MI and PBKS face off. Interestingly, in the IPL so far, Jansen has bowled 11 balls to Rohit, conceding just seven runs without dismissing him, setting up a compelling contest.
Sanju Samson vs Rashid Khan
Sanju Samson, the newest recruit for the five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings, is coming into the tournament on the back of a player of the tournament performance in the T20 World Cup. So he would be in a great frame of mind when CSK start their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals.
He is a great player against right-arm leg-spin (806 IPL runs at a strike rate of 136.8 and averages 33.6 in 87 innings) as opposed to an average of 19.8 (79 runs) against left-arm chinaman bowlers in the IPL. It will be interesting to see how he fares against one of the best right-arm wrist spinners T20 game has ever seen, Rashid Khan, who has picked 93 IPL wickets against the right-handers at an economy rate of 7.12 in 135 innings.
While facing off against each other across nine seasons of IPL, Rashid Khan has picked Sanju’s wicket only once, but the latter’s strike rate in scoring those 121 runs is only 112.00. In the Gujarat Titans- Chennai Super Kings fixture, this match-up is likely to be a highlight.

Ishan Kishan vs Kagiso Rabada
Ishan Kishan has been at his free-flowing best over the past couple of seasons, and his ability to adapt to different conditions in T20 cricket has not only earned him a place in the national side but also seen him take on the captaincy role at Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Likely to bat at No. 3, much like in the T20 World Cup, Kishan will be expected to take the attack to opposition pacers. He has done that effectively in the IPL, scoring 1830 runs against pace at a strike rate of 142, highlighting his ability to dominate fast bowlers.
Oppositions, however, are expected to target him early, with short-pitched bowling being a key strategy. In that regard, Kagiso Rabada stands out as one of the most dangerous exponents of the bouncer in T20 cricket. The Gujarat Titans pacer has dismissed Kishan twice in the IPL, although Kishan has countered strongly, scoring 58 runs at a strike rate of 170.6 against him.
This sets up an exciting contest between Kishan’s attacking intent and Rabada’s pace and aggression – a battle that could play a crucial role when SRH and GT face off this season.
Abhishek Sharma vs Mitchell Starc
Abhishek Sharma has taken the T20 format by storm in the last couple of years, and he can take away the game from the opposition in a matter of overs. The left-hander’s best season in exploiting the first six overs was IPL 2024, where he batted with a strike rate of 203 to score 343 runs.
This was a key reason behind Sunrisers Hyderabad’s run to the final, but they were eventually stopped by Kolkata Knight Riders, with Mitchell Starc playing a decisive role. The left-arm pacer dismissed Abhishek Sharma early in the final, setting the tone for the innings. This makes their match-up one to watch when the Delhi Capitals face the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
